Ohio University Clinical & Translational Research Unit

Ohio University Clinical & Translational Research Unit The Clinical & Translational Research Unit (CTRU) is part of Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The CTRU helps with all stages of research, while offering a way for people like you to get involved! We are the result of a significant evolution and expansion of the former Clinical Research Unit (CRU) housed in the diabetes center. In 2014, the Clinical & Translational Research Unit (CTRU) underwent strategic growth in personnel and resources as the unit completed a physical transition to Irvin

e Hall and consolidated within the Office of Research and Grants. Our team has multiple years of experience in human subjects research. Many are affiliated with professional clinical research organizations and hold research‐specific credentials. We are taking the college’s research program to the next level, and paralleling other institutions that have high-profile clinical research programs. Click on the Notes tab to find directions to us.

On Clinical Trials Day, we recognize not only clinical trials, but also the broader translational research process that makes health discoveries possible.

Translational research helps connect discovery to impact by moving observations from the laboratory, clinic, and community into better ways to prevent, diagnose, treat, and improve health.

Today, we recognize the participants, families, researchers, clinicians, staff, students, and community partners who help make that progress possible.

Today we recognize our graduating student, Maia!

Maia graduated on Saturday with a degree in Journalism News and Information with certificates in Advertising/PR and History. After graduation, Maia will be working with the Greater Cleveland Partnership in Cleveland, Ohio for the summer! She will be working with the membership development and marketing team as a strategic communications intern.

Maia's favorite parts about working with the CTRU this year have been learning more about the field of research, collaborating with others to help produce and edit content, and working on graphic design elements for newsletters and photos. She has done a fabulous job running the unit's social media this school year, and we are so grateful for her hard work!

As for her long-term career goal, Maia wishes to expand her knowledge of arts and culture communications by working in the journalism industry, at a magazine or an online publication.

Congratulations, Maia! We wish you all the best!

Cortical Bone Mechanics Technology, developed at Ohio University, measures how strong the bone is by testing how well it resists bending. This test was able to tell the difference between women with and without prior fractures better than other technologies available, like DXA. Brian Clark, a professor at the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, is also the director of the Ohio Musculoskeletal & Neurological Institute and helped lead this investigation.

A technology developed at Ohio University may do a better job of identifying older women at risk for broken bones than the current standard bone density test.

🚨FAQ Friday: What is an AccuVein?🚨

At the CTRU, one machine that is used frequently is an AccuVein. An AccuVein helps nurses and staff to see veins and valves not visible to the naked eye, according to AccuVein’s website. This helps access veins with more ease!
