We have a new academic program, with spots available:

This free program is an extension of the academic clinic program focused on exploring strategies for increasing the amount of time your child engages in school related tasks. For example, working on increasing self-control and complete more schoolwork. The overall goal of this program would be for your child to learn the association between working harder to be able to enjoy more of the activities that they love.

Please email [email protected] if you are interested.

FCT: Additional Considerations
Speakers: Joel Ringdahl, PhD, BCBA-D

Functional communication training (FCT) emerged over 40 years ago and remains a mainstay in clinical practice and the research literature as an intervention for reducing challenging behavior exhibited by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. On the surface, the procedures can be considered quite simple: identify a functional reinforcer related to challenging behavior and provide that reinforcer differentially contingent on an appropriate communication response. However, real world considerations, including the ability to withhold reinforcers when challenging behavior occurs, limit the potential application and effectiveness of FCT. This presentation will cover some additional design considerations practitioners and researchers should focus on when developing FCT-based intervention. Particular attention will be paid to FCT when implemented as a concurrent schedule-based intervention. Specifically, what additional information might be required to successfully implement FCT using this approach and what implications does this approach have when considering the process of making the intervention more portable/practical for natural settings.
