Congratulations to two of our faculty being named August Faculty Newsmakers! 👏

Dr. Eve Ng, professor, was featured in The Washington Post and other outlets discussing how a child's stuffed bunny became a powerful symbol in Ohio's highly publicized congressional race.

Dr. Ben Bates, professor of health communication, was recognized for being featured in NBC4 and WKBN discussing the latest developments in Ohio's U.S. Senate race.

Capturing from the sidelines 🎥 🏈

As the football season kicks off, Jack Cowman, BS '22, is ready to make the most with his freelance work. In seasons past, he has worked with ESPN, Big Ten Network, and the NFL.

"What I’m looking forward to most this fall is the chance to chase moments that matter. Football gives you these tiny windows where something unforgettable can happen — a look in the quarterback’s eyes before a big play, a sideline reaction that says everything or tracking the ball all the way into a touchdown."

Cowman credits OHIO for preparing him as an integrated media student, especially instructor Evan Shaw and professor Frederick Lewis for shaping the way he shoots, edits and thinks about storytelling.

🌟 Scripps Internship Spotlight: Nathan Bartoe with PANTHERx Rare Pharmacy!

This summer, Nathan, a junior information and telecommunication systems major with a focus in cybersecurity, was an IT Infrastructure Intern for the pharmacy. 💻 💊

In this role, he supported the team by troubleshooting end-user issues, managing user access, documenting technical processes, contributing to infrastructure-related projects and more. He was also part of a company-wide hardware refresh involving 400+ devices.

Nathan worked with teams across IT, including cybersecurity and database administration, including working on a framework for the company's growing IT environment.

"A key lesson I have taken away from this internship is the importance of being bold, humble, and curious. Professional growth comes from taking initiative, building relationships, and seeking opportunities to learn from others."

🌟 Scripps Internship Spotlight: Emily Roesti with Wild Side Media and EMILYs List!

Emily, a senior studying visual communications in the School of Visual Communication, Ohio University - Athens, spent her summer in the Scripps in D.C. program in two part-time internships. She interned with editorial design at Wild Side Media and digital design at EMILYs List. 🏙️

At Wild Side Media, she photographed events, filmed videos and storyboarded and edited social media content. At EMILYs List, she worked with the creative director and a senior graphic designer to complete designs for emails, social media and other departments. 📸 🤳

Throughout the summer, she learned a lot about adaptability and problem-solving working at two different companies simultaneously. Additionally, she learned the importance of developing skills across related fields while exploring what she may want to pursue in her career in the future.

"Working with clients in my VICO classes and completing projects with short turnaround times taught me how to work efficiently while maintaining a high level of quality. These experiences also helped me develop important skills in collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and adaptability."

Ohio University Scripps College of Communication has launched a Sports Photography for Communication Certificate 📸 🏈

Open to undergraduate students of all majors, the certificate combines photojournalism, business and sports administration to prepare students with the experience needed for the next step in their careers.

🌟 Scripps Internship Spotlight: Addie Kearns with the Southern Ohio Copperheads!

Addie, a junior studying journalism, worked as the director of broadcast with the Southern Ohio Copperheads this summer. On home game days, she oversaw the broadcast of each game. 🐍

Her broadcast responsibilities involved working with the production team and collaborating to create graphics for each broadcast. They did everything from setting up equipment to gathering players' league statistics. A highlight was being brought on to work the production for the 2026 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All Star Game. ⚾️

As a high school student, Addie attended the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism High School Journalism Workshop, where participants attended a Copperheads game. She knew she wanted to apply to be a part of the entirely student-run team once she was in college.

"I learned how to collaborate with my team, while maintaining a vision for the broadcasts and leading my team to execute this final product. I’m so proud of all the work we accomplished."

🌟 Scripps Internship Spotlight: Mia Lucas at the Tatyana McFadden Foundation!

Mia, a junior in the Ohio University Honors Tutorial College studying journalism, was a public relations intern at the Tatyana McFadden Foundation this summer. She spent her days working with the seven-time Paralympian to grow her personal social media presence. 📲

Her role involved researching trends and content ideas, planning video and photo shoots for creating educational content, managing social media interactions and more.

The things she learned in her classes about advertising, social media and writing gave her the skills to adapt to the schedule and public relations needs of a public figure.

"My favorite moment this summer in this role was being able to attend the Girl Scouts USA National Convention that Tatyana was a panelist at. More than 7,000 Girl Scouts attended to watch them and it was so heartwarming to be able to meet the girls at Tatyana’s meet-and-greet event the day before the panel. Education about adaptive sports is a big passion of mine, so being able to connect about it with hundreds of others face-to-face was very cool."
