The Ohio University Scripps College of Communication is a leader in communication education—and it is the pride of Ohio University. Generally regarded as one of the top five programs in the nation, Scripps prepares students to be effective and responsible communicators in a global society and advances the field through creative activity and research on communication concepts, issues and problems.

Since its founding 40 years ago, Scripps has grown from just two schools – communication and journalism – to five schools offering more than 40 nationally acclaimed programs. Warren McClure School of Information and Telecommunication Systems to the deeply theoretical in the School of Communication Studies – and everything in between in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, and the Schools of Media Arts and Studies and Visual Communication. In May 2006, the University received a commitment of $15 million from the Scripps Howard Foundation and the college was named in its honor. Scripps also houses the WOUB Public Media, which operates five public radio stations, two public television stations and one cable television station serving more than 60 counties. Through the center’s Student Development Program, more than 250 of the college’s students gain hands-on radio and television experience by assisting with the stations’ day-to-day operations. Scripps has been recognized as “one of Ohio University’s most distinguished programs” by the Guide to 101 of the Best Values in America’s Colleges and Universities. In the fall of 2010, Scripps was named a Center of Excellence in the state of Ohio. Scripps alumni number 26,000 worldwide and are some of the most recognizable names, successful leaders and notable contributors in the field of communication.

In honor of two longtime Ohio University professors and leaders, the "Scott Titsworth and Lynn Harter Launchpad: The Scripps Student Experience Fund" was officially announced during the spring semester. 💚

Designed to help students gain hands-on experiential learning, the fund will help with the cost barrier that comes with some experiences.

"I am deeply grateful that colleagues and friends would create this fund in our honor. If it helps make internships, research, community engagement, and other experiential learning opportunities more accessible to students, then it reflects the very best of what a university can be." — Scott Titsworth

⭐️🔦 Scripps Internship Spotlight: Emily Koehrsen!

Emily, a rising junior studying journalism strategic communication, is the media director for Ohio DII Hockey. 🏒

No two days are exactly the same, but the role includes overseeing media team employees, scheduling and running media events and photoshoots, ensuring the content calendar is filled, holding weekly department meetings and more.

"I learned about this opportunity my senior year of high school after I came across an Instagram reel from a past media team member ... I reached out to her as well as the media director at the time expressing my interest and asked how I could get involved when I got to OU. At the time I was running the social media for my high school’s hockey team, so the idea of taking this experience to another level and getting that push from the past media team members is what ultimately made me apply to this experience."

Despite how much scheduling she is involved in, Emily says she has learned that not everything can be planned.

"You never know what the outcome of a game will be, when someone will achieve a milestone, or if equipment will stop working. It has really taught me to be more go with the flow and to think ahead to prepare for any outcome even if we end up not using the content we prepared." 🐾

⭐️🔦 Scripps Internship Spotlight: AnnaLiess Stith!

AnnaLiess, a rising junior studying communications, is a peer leader in the Communication Resource Center (CRC).

Her role involves helping students with public speaking, helping them navigate the different aspects of the speech assignments for their classes. Often, they are ones she has already taken.

"My COMS classes specifically have really helped prepare me for this position. Presenting in front of people was something I struggled with before college, but after having to present at least once in all my Ohio University School of Communication Studies classes, I have grown a lot more comfortable in my public speaking abilities."

Throughout her classes and in her role in the CRC, AnnaLiess has found that public speaking is a skill that is learned over time. Her experience so far has made her feel more prepared to give students the advice and feedback they're looking for. 📄

"Having students come in unsure on how to deliver a certain section of their speech and leaving with a clear and concise delivery has shown me how impactful practice, encouragement and feedback can be for a student." ✨
