The Cognitive-Communication Rehabilitation Lab serves adults and adolescents with traumatic brain injury (TBI) or concussion. Our research examines functional rehabilitation to support people with brain injury returning to productivity at work and school. Current projects are focused on the return to school following brain injury, episodic future thinking, and metamemory and metacognition after brain injury.

The Cog-Com Rehab Lab and Jennifer Lundine of The Ohio State's CABI Lab are conducting a survey to learn more about the role of speech-language pathologists in returning students to school following concussion. All school SLPs are encouraged to participate, even if you do not work directly with this population. Please follow this link for more info & forward to your School SLP friends. Thank you!

Concussion is a mild form of brain injury that causes a temporary disturbance in cells caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain. If an injury is not identified, there is a risk for additional and more complicated injuries to the brain, which can result in delayed recovery or even fatal outcomes.

Last week, Dr. O'Brien was at the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance Annual Conference presenting research from the lab on return to learn after concussion. Fox 9 News in Minneapolis pulled together a really nice piece explaining the results of master's student Rebecca Posey's thesis! Thanks for all of your work, Rebecca, and happy graduation!

New research on brain concussions in high school students suggests the timetable on how quickly students should return to school should be changed. It also shows the recovery period is much longer than previously thought.

We are looking for adults ages 18 to 80. Participants must speak English fluently, have normal vision and hearing (or corrected to normal), and speak clearly enough to be understood most of the time. You should not have a history of other neurological disease, like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. The study will take about one to one and a half hours to complete, and involves us asking you some questions about things you remember and taking a few short tests. If you are a person with brain injury, we will request medical records. There are no risks to your health associated with this study, although you could become bored. Participants will be compensated $25 for their time.
