Taking a strike and dip in the field but it’s paced like One Piece... ☠️

Geologists use compasses to measure the orientation of rock layers in the field! 🪨 A good way to think of it is with the right hand rule. Take your right hand and orient it so that your fingers point “down-dip,” or on the slope of the plane. Your thumb will be the direction you measure strike, and your fingers will be the dip! 🧭 Similar methods can be used for other features, like fault orientations, lineations, etc. 😎

Understanding the architecture of the rocks beneath our feet is important for making structurally sound infrastructure, avoiding groundwater contamination, assessing geologic hazards like earthquakes and landslides, evaluating economic resources like minerals and hydrocarbons, and more! The list of geology’s uses goes on and on 🌎⛏️

Are you a student interested in a career in industries dedicated to the exploration of natural resources, in public-sector regulation and protection of the environment, or environmental remediation? Or maybe you might be a working professional wanting to obtain another degree while keeping your job? You might be interested in our new 100% ONLINE Master of Science (M.S.) in Environmental Geology ⛰️🌱

The primary aim of this graduate program is to produce professional geologists with a sound grasp of current scientific problems and a solid technical background. We hope these geologists develop the skills and motivation for continued learning that will permit them to solve new scientific problems during their professional careers. 😎

Last week, students in GEOL 4020 (Internal Earth Processes) took a field trip with professor Dr. Mattia Pistone to Stone Mountain Park! They took field observations of the nature of the pluton and its features, including xenoliths, dikes, and tourmaline paws! 🤩🤩

Students also got to learn about the history of Stone Mountain’s mining; though there’s no active quarries anymore today, its granite is found all over the world! 🌎

This could be you btw… register for GEOL 4020 in the spring 😎

It’s not a stupid boulder!!! It’s Goethite! (pronounced ger-tite) 🤩

Are you a fan of the color “ochre”? That automatically makes you a fan of goethite 😎 Not to mention, goethite is a common mineral in iron ore, which is used to make steel!

Goethite is just another example of geology’s importance to global resources that we must manage sustainably! If it’s not grown, it’s mined ⛏️
