Remembering Tony Whitlow
It’s hard to put into words what a light Tony Whitlow was, not just for Mercer County, but for every person lucky enough to know him. Tony was truly one of the sweetest men I’ve ever met. He would stop by our office with that warm smile and tell us stories about how he met his wife, and every time he talked about her it was with the kind of love you don’t forget.
Tony proudly served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea shortly after the war ended. His service to our country was something he carried with humility, but deep pride.
He ran the Veterans War Museum with so much heart. He never pushed, but he always encouraged us to get more involved, to help out where we could, and to keep veterans’ stories alive. That museum wasn’t just a project for him, it was his mission. He wanted to make sure no veteran’s name, sacrifice, or story would ever be forgotten.
Tony lived a life of service in every sense of the word. A veteran, a former senator, a public servant, a storyteller, a neighbor, and a friend, he wore so many titles, but the one that fits him best is good man. From improving mine safety, to helping rescue squads receive recognition and funding, to delivering unclaimed money to families who desperately needed it, he spent decades lifting others up.
He once said, “I didn’t always succeed in what I tried but a lot of times I did, and that makes it all worthwhile.” That was Tony — humble, genuine, and full of heart.
Our office won’t feel the same without his visits, his laughter, his stories, and his gentle reminders about the museum he loved so much. He brought light with him everywhere he went.
Thank you, Tony, for your service, your kindness, and your lifetime of giving. You left an impact on this county, and on all of us, that will never be forgotten.
