The pay-to-play system could be pricing out young soccer talent. ⚽

New research from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Georgia presented evidence that the youth sports system is a market response to the American system of linking sports to education. Schools are funded unequally, and the resources available to an athlete depend heavily on geography and economic class. Elite, privatized club systems developed in response to this disparity, offering quality coaching and competitive schedules for a hefty price tag. This commodified “pay-to-play” structure prevents many talented players from low-income families from accessing the training and resources they need to advance as players, the researchers said.

The event began with tours of the school’s new medical education and research building. Students were later greeted by Hairy Dawg and presented with a School of Medicine welcome box containing branded merchandise and a postcard from Dean Shelley Nuss welcoming them to Athens. A tick bite could change your diet and researchers from the UGA Complex Carbohydrate Research Center are trying to fight it.

The alpha-gal syndrome is an allergy triggered by tick bites that can turn a routine meal into a life-threatening event. The lone star tick, the most prevalent species in Georgia, is a primary transmitter of alpha-gal sugars to humans. In some people, the immune system mistakenly treats alpha-gal sugars in certain foods they eat as a threat, leading to allergic reactions hours later that range from hives and gastrointestinal distress to life-threatening anaphylaxis.

The IEP designation recognizes institutions that demonstrate a substantive, sustainable and institution-wide commitment to and strategy for regional economic engagement, growth and economic opportunity. UGA was one of only 16 universities in the country to receive the initial designation in 2013 and has maintained the recognition through rigorous five-year review processes.
