Today's Special Collections Fellows Feature is on Carol Britton Laws, who is with the Institute on Human Development and Disability /College of Family and Consumer Sciences
What has been your favorite special collections item or group of items to use in teaching? Why?
I love using the artifacts in the Georgia Disability History Archives. There are many luminaries who have fought for the rights of people with disabilities in Georgia (and beyond) and you can learn a lot about their work from these collections.
How do students respond to or what do they take from the experience of working closely with special collections materials?
Students are curious about the experiences of others and being able to hold an object or directly engage with a one-of-a-kind artifact helps them connect to lived experiences that may not be like theirs. I have seen my students connect more deeply to issues, both past and present, when they interact with, and critically think about, collections materials.
