Chi Epsilon - Ohio University Chi Epsilon, The National Civil Engineering Honor Society Ohio University Chapter (Athens, OH)

"Dedicated to the purpose of maintaining and promoting the status of civil engineering as an ideal profession, Chi Epsilon was organized to recognize the characteristics of the individual civil engineer deemed to be fundamental to the successful pursuit of an engineering career, and to aid in the development of those characteristics in the civil engineering student. Engineering, the application of

scientific principles to the practical needs of society, is assuming a constantly increasing responsibility for the well being of all people, and thus calling for competence of the highest order. This responsibility can be discharged only by a professional group whose members are possessed of a good basic technical ability, intelligence, moral integrity, and effective social poise in their relationship with the larger community of which they are part. To contribute to the improvement of the profession, Chi Epsilon fosters the development and exercise of sound traits of character and technical ability among civil engineers, and its members, by precept and example, toward an ever-higher standard of professional service". This Saturday, Chi Epsilon teamed up with the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists to present two civil engineering-related activities at our school's third annual Engineering and Technology Day. Chi Epsilon taught the kids about topography with an augmented reality sandbox. As the kids played in the sand, the projector above showed them the changes they made in the contour lines. AAEES made Chihuly art from old projector sheets to help the kids learn more ways to reuse plastic waste. Both clubs had a great time showing everyone what civil engineering has to offer and can't wait to be back next year!

Alex is a graduate student doing research on the longitudinal joints between prestressed concrete girder bridges. Both Alex's father and grandfather were masons, which he cites as being his inspiration to study civil engineering and continue the family tradition of building. His favorite class was Structural Theory I, which kicked off his interest in structural engineering. Alex spent a few summers interning for Mosser Construction, mainly doing project management for heavy highway projects. In his free time, Alex enjoys re-watching some of his favorite TV shows such as The Sopranos, Mad Men, and House of Cards. He is also a Cleveland Indians fan.

Rachel, a senior, chose civil engineering because it is a varied field with opportunities to do work away from the desk. She has had a variety of experiences in her internships with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), Surveying and Mapping, LLC (SAM), and Infrastructure Engineering, Inc. (IEI). At SAM, she learned to use a GPS unit to do commercial surveying. At IEI, she completed bridge inspections all over the state of PA, during which she once ran into a momma bear with her cub!

In her free time, Rachel enjoys reading and hiking. Her favorite civil class so far is hydraulics and hydrology.

Illona, a senior, chose civil engineering because of her passions for the built environment, structural design & architecture, calculus, geology, and working for the public. She says she "hopes to help underprivileged communities or natural hazard areas by designing sustainable buildings with the help of my creative, mathematical, and problem solving skills."

Near her home in the Netherlands, Illona worked for two semesters as a structural draftsman on multiple concrete designs and built environment projects in Amsterdam. There she was able to catch up with friends and family while gaining structural engineering experience, highlighting the process of designing a building from a sketch to construction. In her free time, Illona is training for a run across America in summer 2019 with the Ulman Cancer Fund. She has also played field hockey since she was 12.

Meet our 2018 chapter officers!

Hometown: Dayton, OH

Jacob is a first year graduate student in civil/transportation engineering. Jacob says he chose civil engineering because, "it is the exciting field where simple materials (such as wood, dirt, and rocks) can be placed together to form the buildings, highways, and damns that we take for granted everyday."
As an undergraduate, Jacob held three research positions through which he gained valuable engineering experience. His research included creating and presenting three new designs for a General Mills facility in Wellston, OH; designing a safer, more environmentally friendly kayak ramp at Strouds Run State Park, which will be built this December; and leading a design team for a new system to prevent wrong-way driving traffic accidents, which he presented in Washington D.C. His current graduate research is also focused on wrong-way driving.

Jacob is also involved with the Concrete Canoe Team and the Club Power-lifting Team. In his free time, he likes cooking/consuming large amounts of food, woodworking, thrift shopping, fishing and kayaking, and watching the Office.

Chi Epsilon (the National Civil Engineering Honor Society) Ohio University Chapter stopped by Trimble Elementary/Middle School for their after school program. We showed the kids how to build bridges and how much force water can create. The kids love us so much they wanted us to go back go every week 🙂!!
