Recent alumni: Do you miss us? Do you want a reason to stick around UGA Engineering a bit longer?

Applications are now open for a new cohort of the UGA Engineering Alumni Board! Members devote their time and creativity to help build lifelong connections between the College of Engineering and our alumni. This board plays a significant role in guiding the efforts and initiatives of the College, and members serve as ambassadors for Bulldog Engineering across the nation.

Alumni who have obtained a degree of any level within the past five years (2021-2026) are encourages to apply. Current graduate students who received an undergraduate degree from the UGA College of Engineering are eligible to serve on the board. Selected board members serve a two-year term with bi-annual board meetings and are expected to attend other student and alumni events.

The countdown to convocation continues. Yesterday afternoon, graduating seniors took place in the Order of the Engineer ceremony. Upon reciting and accepting the Obligation of the Engineer, engineers receive a stainless steel ring, worn on the fifth finger of the working hand.

Meet our Spring 2026 Convocation speaker, Deborah Madden!
 
Deborah is a Foundation Fellow and Stamps Scholar, is graduating with a degree in Environmental Engineering and a Certificate in Electric Mobility.
 
Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Deborah completed her final years of high school in Freiburg, Germany, before coming to Athens and joining the UGA community. During her time at UGA, Deborah has served as the President of the National Society of Black Engineers and has been involved with the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society.
 
She is passionate about environmental sustainability and has contributed to meaningful work in Dr. Jenna Jambeck’s Circularity Informatics Lab since her freshman year. Deborah has interned at the West African Genetic Medicine Research Laboratory in Ghana, 2KB Energy Services, and MIT, where her research on the bacterial biodegradation of plastic was recently published. 
 
Following graduation, Deborah will move to Atlanta, where she will begin her career as a Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company.

"To me, engineering means creativity. I have always loved creating things, so the engineering department was the natural place for me. I am so fascinated by the whole discipline that sometimes I find it hard to choose between fields—part of me wishes I could be a civil or mechanical engineer, too!"

Abolfazl Najar, PhD student in Electrical and Computer Engineering, wants to use his creativity and curiosity to contribute to big goals.

"I’ve learned that the biggest innovations, ideas, and solutions are shaped by simple equations, relationships, and their repetition. Always ask questions and push the boundaries of your creativity. Never hesitate to propose an unconventional idea."
