Meet Isabella Pellicano, a spring 2026 Odum graduate! Isabella is graduating with a B.S. in Ecology, a B.S. in Plant Biology, and a Spanish minor. π±
One of Isabellaβs most influential undergrad experiences was her fall 2023 semester abroad with the Tropical Ecology program in Costa Rica. There, she became fascinated with ferns and learned about forest succession, epiphytic plants and tropical soils. π΄πΊ It was also through this experience that she researched fern leaf traits, investigating whether road vs. trail edge habitats differentially impacted fern herbivory, leaf water content and trichomes.
Since 2023, Isabella has conducted research in the Wurzburger Lab, analyzing the interaction of nitrogen-fixing and non-nitrogen-fixing invasive plants and their impact on soil chemistry and mycorrhizal fungi. πβπ« Currently, she is investigating how certain shrub leaf litter and mycorrhizal fungi are impacted by climate change in northern Minnesota. Isabella credits her opportunities to engage with research as the most influential pursuit of her undergraduate career. Research introduced her to below-ground symbiosis, solidified her interest in pursuing a Ph.D., and taught her about time management, experimental design and science collaboration. π¬
Outside of research, Isabella volunteers with Casa de Amistad, where she teaches English to adult language learners. She does hip hop at DanceFX, and enjoys reading, crafting, cooking and hiking in her free time. π§βπ³ππ¨π₯Ύ
As a recently selected semi-finalist for a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Ecuador, Isabella may have the opportunity to spend nine months abroad after graduation. πͺπ¨ Afterward, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Ecology, studying how global changes influence plant-fungal interactions.
Congrats, Isabella! We are so proud of you! ππ
