This Earth Day, let us gather together to lift up the important environmental work of LGBTQ+ people in our community. Join us for this outdoor film screening to open deeper discussions about climate vulnerability in q***r and trans communities and how we can work together to prepare for resilience. This event will raise funds for the completion of the documentary and for mutual aid for q***r resilience projects in the wake of climate disasters.

About the film:
Fire & Flood documents these near-simultaneous climate disasters in the fall of 2017 through the voices of 24 LGBTQ+ people who led projects for the resilience of their communities and bioregions. In connecting the wildfire experiences of Californians with the hurricane experiences of Puerto Ricans, the film provides a unique view into the shared histories and enduring legacies of colonization, and highlights q***r and trans resilience projects that point to transformational solutions for the roots of our climate crisis.

Accessibility:
- Lake Herrick Pavilion is wheel-chair accessible from the Intramural Field Parking Deck.
- Spanish interpretation will be available. The documentary has bilingual captions for mixed English and Spanish-speaking audiences.
- Another version of the film is available with English-only captions for Deaf and hard of hearing. Please contact us through this form if this version would be more accessible to you and we will set-up a second screen to play these subtitles simultaneously.

EspañaEnCorto is a short film festival that offers an inside look at current short films directed by Spanish filmmakers. These short films arrive from different regions of Spain, and inspire a unique perspective into the languages, cultures, and current topics in the most recent years.


All the shortfilms will have English subtitles, the event will be free, and it is open to the whole community of Athens. We will open the doors at 6:30pm, and we will start the event at 7:00pm. There will be a short presentation from two guest speakers, and the screening of the shortfilms will last around 1 hour. After that, we will start our Q & A moderated by some of the members of the organizing committee.

Tinker Foundation-UGA LACSI Graduate Field Research Award Competition
Deadline: Monday, May 2, 2022, 5:00 PM

The University of Georgia Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) is pleased to announce its 2022 Tinker Foundation-LACSI Graduate Field Research Award Competition.

Travel awards are granted to highly qualified University of Georgia graduate students from any discipline, interested in conducting preliminary graduate field research in the Spanish or Portuguese-speaking Latin American and Caribbean region (excluding Puerto Rico) during 2022. All masters or doctoral students with an interest in carrying out graduate research in Latin America are encouraged to apply. The vast majority of awards are provided to students who are in the first or second year of their programs. The Tinker Foundation specifically states that these awards offer students the opportunity to: acquire a comprehensive knowledge of language, terrain, and culture; familiarize them with information sources relevant to their studies; conduct pilot studies and preliminary investigations that will inform their masters work or dissertation proposals; and develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their fields of study. The deadline for submission of all application elements is 5:00 PM Monday, May 2, 2022. Award recipients will be notified during the week of May 9 -13, 2022.

Please note that preference is given to applicants who have applied for the LACSI Graduate Certificate but is this is not a requirement to be considered for funding. Information on the LACSI Graduate Certificate is found here: The fillable .pdf is found here on the LACSI website site.

Awards may be used for international airfare and associated in-country expenses. Such in-country expenses may include, for example: bus travel, lodging, country entry/exit fees, travel insurance, visas, field research supplies, etc. The average award size in 2020 was $1475.

Graduate Students selected for the 2022 Tinker Award must apply for approval from the UGA Office of Global Engagement (OGE) for international travel.

2022 CLASP Junior Faculty Teaching Award
The Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP) calls for nominations for its ninth annual “CLASP Junior Faculty Teaching Award.” The award recognizes excellence in teaching designated Latin American Studies courses, including Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL) courses in Portuguese, Creole, and indigenous language courses with content on Latin American civilization, culture, history, and social sciences. Tenured faculty members are not eligible. Nominees in a tenure-track position are preferred, but visiting or adjunct professors and instructors/lecturers are eligible. Graduate students are not eligible. Nominees must have a Ph.D., with the exception of language instructors, and they must be currently teaching at a CLASP member institution. Nominations should come from senior or supervising faculty or administrators. However, self-nominations are also accepted, but the self-nominator must include at least three professional references in the self-nomination letter. The nominator (or self-nominator) should briefly provide clear and convincing evidence of the following:
Outstanding teaching effectiveness, including pedagogical style and student success stories.
Contributions to the Latin American Studies program and/or the Department.
Involvement in the wider community, including professional associations and participation in service activities.
Incorporation of own academic research and field experiences into the classroom.
Enhancement of regional or country-specific understandings through language acquisition, for language professors and instructors.

Nominees must provide a current CV and a Statement of Teaching Philosophy. In the Statement of Teaching Philosophy or nomination letter, nominees are encouraged to address how they adapted their teaching to the COVID-19 pandemic. Statements of Teaching Philosophy may also be submitted in Spanish or Portuguese.

The CLASP Teaching Committee and former winners will evaluate the nominations. The finalists will be asked to provide the contact information of two current or former students. These students may be asked to provide evidence of teaching effectiveness in a short recommendation letter. Nominations are now accepted through Thursday, March 31st, 2022.

The winner will be announced at the CLASP Business Meeting at the now-virtual Latin American Studies Association International Congress, May 5-8, 2022.

The winner receives an engraved trophy and $500 and will be asked to participate in future selection processes and contribute to the Teaching Resources on the CLASP website.

On March 21, 2022, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm MST, the Latin American and Iberian Institute at The University of New Mexico will co-sponsor an online event, “Marys Leading the Charge,” a conversation with Mary Romero, Mary Goldsmith, and Mary Castro, to inaugurate the First Congress on Domestic Work in Latin America. This keynote session, which foregrounds the panelists' pioneering works Muchachas no More and Maid in the USA, will focus on the state of the art of research and activism in relation to domestic work in the 21st century, and their presentations will be available in Spanish, Portuguese and English. The virtual Congress, organized by the Red de Investigación sobre Trabajo del Hogar en América Latina (RITHAL) is scheduled for March 26-28, and will bring together panels, roundtables and individual presentations by researchers and activists alike. Founded in 2017 and comprising of 130 members in 19 countries, RITHAL is a network that seeks to create spaces for dialogue and exchange for those who study domestic work in different countries of Latin America.
