Congratulations to doctoral student Ben Prostine! Ben was awarded the 2026 Alice Kessler-Harris Dissertation Prospectus Award from the Labor and Working-Class History Association for his dissertation project, "Milked: Land, Labor, and Livestock in the Twentieth Century Dairy Industry." "
The Alice Kessler-Harris Dissertation Prospectus Award is awarded to “the best dissertation prospectus about working people, their lives, workplaces, communities, organizations, cultures, activism, and societal context in any period and place."

Kudos to Elizabeth Shermer! Dr. Shermer is one of twelve­ UGA’s Special Collections Faculty Teaching Fellows recently named by the UGA Libraries. University of Georgia faculty members will re-imagine historical pieces into active-learning opportunities for students as part of UGA’s Special Collections Faculty Teaching Fellows program, now in its 11th year on campus.

While projects are in the beginning stages, the newest Special Collections Faculty Teaching Fellows are planning unique class activities in fields from English and history to international affairs, fashion, chemistry, and physics, incorporating a broad array of materials from the UGA Libraries three special collections departments. UGA named 2026 top producer of Fulbright students -

Eleven University of Georgia students received Fulbright offers for the 2025-2026 academic year, placing UGA among the top producing institutions for Fulbright U.S. students for the fourth year in a row.

Congratulations to Fulbright recipient Anna Whaley; history, political science, Spanish; Spain!

Of the 11 UGA students and recent alumni who were offered Fulbright awards, five were able to accept. Three are teaching English in countries including France, Spain and Uzbekistan. Two are conducting research; their countries are Indonesia and Laos.

On Friday January 23, 2026, SPIA hosted Declaration Day, a celebration the 250th anniversary of the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence. The centerpiece of Declaration Day was an interactive panel featuring experts (pictured right) Robert Parkinson (Binghamton University), Peter Hoffer (center) (History Dept., University of Georgia), and Jeremy Cynamon (left) (Clemson University). Join us for the inaugural presentation of the Dr. John H. Morrow and Dr. Diane B. Morrow Lectureship Series: Matthew Delmont (Dartmouth College) will present a lecture on his recent book and research entitled, "Half American: The Heroic Story of African Americans Fighting World War II at Home and Abroad."

A UGA Signature Lecture. This is a free event.*

Dr. Matthew Delmont is the Frank J. Guarini Associate Dean of International Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies and the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor of History at Dartmouth College. An expert on African-American History and the history of Civil Rights, he is the author of Half American: The Epic Story of African Americans Fighting World War II at Home and Abroad (Viking Books, 2022), which received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. He is also the author of four previous books, and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Public Scholar Award to support his research. In addition to his published works, he regularly shares his research with media outlets, including the New York Times, NPR, TheAtlantic.com, Washington Post, and The Conversation.

Presented by the History Department and Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.
