Hey SNPhAm!!! Its the second day of the black history month highlights. Today we are recognizing Dr. James McCune Smith. Dr. Smith attended college at the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 1837. He was the first African American with a medical degree. Dr. Smith returned to New York City and opened a pharmacy on West Broadway street. He became the first African American to run a pharmacy. Dr. Smith used the back room of the drug store as a meeting room, where he met with fellow activist to lead the abolitionist movement. They sought to end slavery in the south, and the drug store was also used as a refuge for escaped slaves. Let's take a moment to acknowledge this amazing trailblazer in pharmacy, who paved the way for so many others to have an opportunity in pharmacy.

COPD is a mnemonic used to describe chronic lung diseases. In addition to breathlessness, individuals with COPD
also experience cough with or without mucus. Currently, there is no cure for COPD, but we have medication options for treatment and vaccines to aid in protection of those at risk for developing COPD. Managing a medical condition, from patient to patient, is not always the same. Therefore, it cannot be ignored that once upon being diagnosed with COPD, the individual’s life will change. Because of this, we raise awareness with the goal to prevent COPD; and if already living with COPD, manage it and improve the patient’s quality of life.

Smoking is a well-established risk factor for all forms of stroke and while both the general public and our healthcare system are aware of the risks associated with smoking, the prevalence of to***co use has remained largely unchanged. The American Cancer Society created the “Great American Smokeout” challenge every Thursday before Thanksgiving to encourage smokers to stop smoking for at least 24hrs in hopes of quitting altogether. About 32.4 million American adults smoke and it remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. We can educate our patients on the harmful effects of smoking and va**ng and help them establish ways to quit.
