In Spring 2023, Miss NABJ-CAU Devyn Bullock envisioned a collaborative event that would unite all of the organizations within Clark Atlanta University’s Mass Media Arts Department. As the reigning queen of her organization, she created the Royal Showcase, a signature event designed to highlight not traditional pageant talents, but the real career aspirations and professional skills of each contestant.
Rather than focusing on conventional performances, contestants used the talent portion to demonstrate the kind of work they hope to pursue in the media industry. The Q&A portion centered on Mass Media Arts, and the selection of each titleholder was placed in the hands of their peers—the students who see them in class every day and know firsthand who they would want to represent them.
The titles of Mr. and Miss PRSSA, Mr. and Miss The Panther Newspaper, and Mr. and Miss WSTU represent the department’s three concentrations, while Mr. and Miss NABJ-CAU reflect the broad scope of media leadership embodied by the organization, despite journalism being in its name.
Since its first showcase in Studio A, the event has continued to grow. It has since moved to Davage, incorporated CAU-TV, attracted sponsors, and built an undeniable buzz across campus.
What makes the Royal Showcase especially meaningful is that it is powered by students. The choreography, pageant training, show direction, decorations, stage production, scriptwriting, hosting, promotional materials, and photography are all created and executed by students. It is a true collaboration—bringing together every concentration and every organization for one exciting evening to crown new ambassadors for their organizations and for the department.
Those crowned as kings and queens take on significant responsibility throughout their reign. Each titleholder is required to host five events during the year, with at least two community service initiatives, participate in fundraising efforts, attend professional conferences, maintain at least a B average, and represent the department and university during major occasions such as coronation, Admitted Students Day, and other departmental events.
