UAEM is continuing its tradition of organizing a Pre-Health Gala this semester open to undergraduates, with a focus on first year students interested in pursuing pre-health careers. This is an opportunity to become familiarized with some of the pre-health clubs offered at Emory, engage in discussions with peers that may inspire future collaborations, and indicate interest in joining new organizations. Each club participating in the gala will give a ~2-minute overview of their organization, after which there will be an opportunity to join the private, direct follow-up Zoom meetings for any club of interest. This event offers a chance to meet fellow students interested in health careers and learn about opportunities to get involved in the Emory pre-health community.

The Pre-Health Gala will be held this Thursday, October 1st, from 6-7:30PM via Zoom (https://emory.zoom.us/J/4668507249)

The following clubs will be represented:

Emory Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM)
Doctors Without Borders
American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB)
Remote Area Medical (RAM)
Emory Pre-Medical Association (EPMA)
Emory American Student Dental Association (EASDA)
Phi Delta Epsilon
Health and Development in Guatemala
Pre-Physician Assistant Society
Student Alliance for Health Involvement at Emory (SAHI)
Global Medical Brigades
Emory Undergraduate Service Journal Club (EUSJC)
Emory MEDLIFE
Emory Children's Healthcare Outreach (ECHO)

We hope you will join us at this event!

This is an interesting opinion piece looking at how to address the rising number of vaccine-preventable infectious diseases. Specifically, the author claims that providing a mandate at the federal level is would be unconstitutional and ineffective, and rather, we should focus efforts at the state level to educate people and to increase the percentage of children vaccinated.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb may want the federal government to narrow vaccine exemptions, but that could violate the law and worsen vaccine resistance.

Important for those women who might be worried about getting a flu shot while pregnant! Be sure to get your flu shot!

The reassuring finding contradicts an earlier study by the same researchers that raised questions about the safety of getting a flu shot during pregnancy.

This is the first treatment for fatty liver disease that may make it to market. This is exciting from a drug discovery basis, but it still shows quite modest effects. My recommendation is to keep eating well and exercising to reduce your chances of being in this situation.

Clinical trial results give the company a shot at becoming the first drug to treat the condition — and possibly turn it into a blockbuster opportunity.

This is an interesting read on alleged price fixing schemes. The unredacted emails appear in an unfavorable light for the generic drug makers.

The point of generic drug makers is to introduce competition to brand name products and reduce prices. Perhaps this strategy, used presumably to maximize profit, indicates the need for generic drug makers to maximize profit in order to continue competing with brand name pharmaceutical companies, but this is just speculation.

I encourage you to have a read (~7 min).

A copy of an unredacted lawsuit provides various examples in which state prosecutors alleged companies worked together to manipulate prices.

The WHO released a comprehensive report looking at the pricing and accessibility of cancer medicines and calls for improvement. Some industry proponents disagree.

Here is a summary (~5 min read): https://www.statnews.com/pharmalot/2019/01/23/who-cancer-drugs-prices/?utm_source=STAT+Newsletters&utm_campaign=66fd25de8a-Pharmalot&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8cab1d7961-66fd25de8a-150898913

The bottom of the article has a link to the entire WHO report.

The 117-page report concluded that the “market structure for cancer medicines is characterized by "imperfect competition."
