In a recent STAT News opinion piece, Emory Nursing Assistant Professor and nurse Dr. Nicholas Giordano highlights a pressing issue: men remain significantly underrepresented in nursing, accounting for only about 12% of the workforce nationwide.

At a time when demand for nurses continues to grow, and health systems face ongoing staffing shortages, expanding gender diversity is more than a workforce strategy; it’s a pathway to strengthening patient care.

Research shows that diverse care teams can enhance both workplace dynamics and patient experiences.

Dr. Giordano argues that recruiting more men into nursing is essential to meeting demand and continuing to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care across communities.

Men make up just 12% of nurses nationally. That needs to change.

Please join us in congratulating our Associate Director of Admissions in the Office of Enrollment and Student Affairs, Ashley Chilla, on being one of Emory University's 2026 Award of Distinction Honorees! This honor is the highest award university staff members can receive for their contributions to the Emory community.

Ashley's contributions can be felt across many areas of the School of Nursing. She strengthened application and enrollment outcomes by reimagining the Student Ambassador program, and she has helped create a more welcoming and connected experience for prospective and admitted students.

Just as importantly, she shows up for her colleagues every day. Through her roles as chair of the Staff Governance Committee and an EmBrace peer supporter, Ashley helps foster a workplace where people feel heard, supported, and valued. Her thoughtful, people-first approach to leadership has earned her the School of Nursing’s Excellence in Social Responsibility Award and reflects her deep commitment to building an inclusive and caring community. Congratulations, Ashley, on this well-deserved honor.

We’re celebrating our VANAP and Emory In MOTION scholars following their recent graduation. Throughout their time at Emory Nursing, these students made a meaningful impact by serving communities across the health care system.

VANAP Scholars are BSN students who support the veteran population through adult clinical rotations at the Atlanta VA Healthcare System (AVAHCS). Emory In MOTION Scholars are pre- and post-licensure students who deliver primary care to medically underserved communities through nurse-led mobile health units, while deepening their training in social determinants of health and culturally and linguistically responsive care.

We’re so proud of the difference you’ve made! Congratulations and thank you for your commitment to our communities!

School of Nursing Assistant Professor Nicholas Giordano and Grady Memorial Hospital orthopedic trauma surgeon and School of Medicine Professor Mara Schenker are exploring personalized, non opioid approaches to pain management, helping patients heal in ways to go beyond medication alone.

Their collaboration alongside health activist Cammie Rice and the CWC Alliance has led to the incorporation of life care specialists who offer trauma-informed support and evidence-based pain management guidance throughout the recovery process.
