This commencement season, we celebrate more than degrees. We celebrate determination, resilience, and the power of community support.

Through the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation’s $50 million HBCU scholarship initiative, nearly 600 students across Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University have received more than $4.2 million in gap funding to help them stay enrolled and cross the finish line.

This weekend, the initiative’s first spring graduates will walk across the stage, proving that investing in students changes lives, families, and communities for generations to come. The Class of 2026 is making history with seven valedictorians, a powerful reflection of academic excellence across disciplines at Spelman College.

This year’s Top Ten graduates represent a dynamic range of majors and future paths, with seven students earning the distinction of valedictorian by achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA. The salutatorian honor is awarded to the next highest-ranking graduate, and Latin honors, cm laude, magna cm laude, and summa cm laude, are determined by cumulative GPA thresholds established by the College.

As senior pastor of Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Stewart made history as the first African American woman to lead an established African American Baptist congregation in Memphis and Shelby County. Smiles Reimagined is where innovation meets dentistry. Designed to bridge the Pre-Dental Society and the Spelman Innovation Lab, this initiative gives students hands-on experience with emerging technology, including 3D modeling and virtual reality, as well as 3D printing full skulls and mock teeth. Led by Jaylyn Thomas, C’2026, and Kailen Bain, C’2026, Smiles Reimagined is redefining what’s possible at the intersection of science, creativity, and innovation.
