Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Every year, our incoming cohort of Stamps Scholars embarks on a series of Tech Treks through Outdoor Recreation at GT (ORGT), where they learn teamwork, creativity, out of the box problem solving, and so much more.

Check out the adventures of SPS ‘25 as they took on Colorado, Alaska, and Montana!

This past summer, Bryce Jones (SPS 24) and Jay Imperatori (SPS 24) completed a 105-mile trek around Mont Blanc going through France, Italy, and Switzerland. Having met on their freshman Tech Trek to Alaska, they worked together to plan and execute this project. The Tour du Mont Blanc has around 32,800 feet of elevation gain (3,800 feet more than the highest peak of Mount Everest!), making it incredibly challenging to plan. Bryce and Jay mapped out the routes, secured the proper gear, and took all the right safety precautions, to navigate the trail.
“It’s a pretty physically demanding trail, but that was part of the experience.” - Jay Imperatori

We are so excited to announce that General Ronald Johnson, our Leadership Faculty Guide, was named as the 39th Black Engineer of the Year! General Johnson serves his community with spirit, determination, and humility, and he leads with purpose to make the world around him better. We couldn’t be prouder!

“Ron’s leadership has always been about more than just engineering or command,” said General Johnnie Wilson, himself a legend in the military and a past BEYA honoree. “He embodies service and integrity, with a steadfast commitment to lifting others as he climbs.”

Our Stamps Scholars recently took a spirit trip to the Atlanta Alpaca Treehouse facilitated by our very own Mackenzie Bellamy! This intercohort trip gave students the chance to interact with alpacas, roosters, and other species while also exploring the treehouse itself, which was built using reclaimed architectural antiques. This was such a fun and educational experience!

One of our class of ‘28 Stamps Scholars, Abigail Buchanan, recently presented a TEDx Talk through GaTech TEDx on the theme “Threads”. Her topic—Community is Dead: Assessing Hyper-individualism and How to Fix It—was inspired by the stark contrast in her Cameroonian mother’s strong values surrounding the community that were instilled in her growing up in the East, and the lack of community she observes around her in the West. Abigail discussed the increasing emphasis placed on hyper-individualism in Western cultures, dove into the history behind this phenomenon, analyzed its effects on society, and finally challenged her audience to work towards prioritizing community and finding the thread that connects us all. We’re so proud of you, Abby!

Biomedical engineering student Caitlin van Zyl (SPS21), her sister & mechanical engineering major Jacqui van Zyl (SPS20), and Meg Weaver, a biomedical engineering major, took first place in the annual InVenture competition with their invention - NeuroChamp. The wearable, concealed headband is used to monitor pediatric seizures continuously. InVenture is an undergraduate entrepreneurship competition, and NeuroChamp’s win sent the team home with $15,000. Congratulations to our scholars Caitlin and Jacqueline Van Zyl, as well as Meg Weaver for this amazing achievement!
