When Flynn Allen arrived at Georgia State University’s School of Music, they were searching for the next step in their artistic journey.

Three years later, they leave as a double Panther graduate — earning both a Master of Music and Artist Certificate in Vocal Performance while growing as a performer, teacher and advocate for visibility in opera.

We’re honored to share that Harmony of Freedom has received a Bronze Telly Award in the General Documentary category!

This project was created through the collaboration of musicians, historians, students, educators, and community partners who believed in the importance of preserving these stories through music and film. Thank you to everyone who helped bring it to life.

Alumni News:
Congratulations to Eliél Freer-Sullivan (GSU 2018), who was recognized in the recent Radio Brazil Atlanta Awards with a Destaques do Year 2026 (Highlights of the Year) award.

Eliél was honored for his work teaching Portuguese-language songs to his elementary music students at Atlanta’s Paideia School. His classroom videos have gained international attention this year, bringing his teaching approach to a global audience.

Meet Garrett Clay, a graduating orchestral conducting student from the Georgia State University School of Music whose time at Georgia State helped shape both his artistry and approach to teaching.

From leading performances on the podium to working with student musicians across Atlanta, Garrett says his experience in the conducting program taught him the value of vulnerability, collaboration and growth.

As he prepares to return to the classroom, he hopes to inspire future students to discover the same passion for music that first inspired him.

Professor Trevigne recently performed with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in Innocence Lost, the orchestra’s closing concert of the 2025–26 season. Conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, the program featured Copland’s Appalachian Spring and Tippett’s A Child of Our Time alongside an internationally recognized cast of soloists.

What You Learn Learning Music, written with Mike Shaw, will be published November 4, 2026 by Hysteria in association with Simon & Schuster.
The book reflects on the ways learning music shapes how we move through the world—discipline, listening, persistence, collaboration, and growth—drawing from years of performing, teaching and lived experience.

Meet Laila Atkins (B.M. ’26), a music education student whose journey at Georgia State has been grounded in connection, performance and a passion for teaching.

From performing internationally in Istanbul to taking the stage at the ACDA national conference, Laila has grown as both a musician and future educator. Through her coursework and mentorship, she’s developed the skills and confidence to step into the classroom and inspire young musicians.

“I’m excited to begin my career and continue growing,” she shares.

We’re excited to see the impact she’ll make in the next chapter!
