Our graduate students organized a fundraising event to support immigrants held in detention centers here in Georgia. They invited GSU students to take part by writing Valentine’s Day–themed letters to spread encouragement and care. The event also featured a bake sale, with all proceeds going toward the cause.

Meet Robin Cathey 👋🏼 Associate Director, Intensive English Program.

Robin plays a key role in shaping programs that truly respond to students’ needs. Her work ranges from researching how learners grow to developing new ideas that turn insight into action.

One of those initiatives is the Community Partnership at Clarkston, a program that reflects her belief in learning beyond the classroom. For Robin, building strong community connections is essential to creating access, support, and meaningful opportunities for learners.

Meet Sharon Santmyer! 👋🏼 Our IEP Lecturer.

Sharon was once an English learner herself, which gives her a unique perspective on the student journey. She shares how international students build confidence by setting themselves up for success and taking small, consistent steps along the way.

She also highlights that student success is a shared effort: a student’s commitment matters just as much as an instructor’s willingness to guide, support, and encourage them throughout the process.

Meet our Director, John Bunting! 👋🏼

John has had the privilege of meeting thousands of students throughout his career at the IEP and witnessing their incredible stories of success. For many of them, the IEP was a small but meaningful step toward building confidence and opening new opportunities.

When asked about the key to the Intensive English Program, John is clear: the human component matters most. Feeling supported, encouraged, and included is what helps students build confidence. This experience is further strengthened by the expertise of our instructors and the university’s research-driven approach, creating a program that truly supports student success helps to keep climbing toward their dreams, and truly feel they belong.

Welcome, IEP Students! 🎉
We kicked off the spring semester with our orientation session, and it was a pleasure meeting our new students and seeing their excitement as they begin this new journey.

This is a path where our goal is to provide the tools, support, and confidence needed to communicate in a second language—and to succeed in future academic and professional careers.

Thank you for choosing us. We’re excited to be part of your journey!

Thank you also to all our instructors for your love of teaching and for supporting our students.

This semester comes to an end — a semester full of new experiences, challenges, and growth for all of us. For some, it was the very first step in the IEP, for others, the final chapter before starting a new one. Some students are heading to college, others are beginning new opportunities, but they all share something important:

They belong to a community that supports them, believes in them, and helps them build the confidence to move forward.

Thank you to all our students for being part of this journey. We’re proud of every step you’ve taken. And thank you to our teachers for being the mentors who guide and inspire our students every day.
