Emory Writing Center

Emory Writing Center A free service to foster the development of writers of all levels, abilities, and disciplines!

The Emory Writing Center staff includes talented and welcoming undergraduate and graduate tutors from a range of disciplines. They are eager to work with all writers at all stages of the composing process. Whether you are exploring ideas, revising a draft, or polishing a final version of a project, the Writing Center is the place for you. They offer discussion- and workshop- based tutorials for in

dividuals and groups that enable writers to approach their work with fresh eyes and to consider a variety of strategies for writing, revising, and editing. All Writing Center tutors are trained to work with digital and multi-modal texts in addition to traditional papers. Tutors can talk with you about the purpose, organization, and audience of your work, your design choices, or how you engage other texts. They can also work with you on sentence-level concerns, including grammar, syntax, and word choice; however, they will not proofread for you. Instead, they will discuss strategies and resources you can use to become a better editor of your own work.

We are relieved, we are weary, we continue the struggle. Take care, Emory, and seek support when you need it. President Fenves links to several helpful resources in yesterday's letter:

“Although there was accountability today, there is still much left to be done,” President Gregory L. Fenves says, noting that at Emory “we have a responsibility to use our knowledge and talents and lead with our values.” Read his full statement.

We in the Emory Writing Center are all deeply saddened and angered by the horrific murders in Atlanta this week. Most of the victims of Tuesday’s hate crimes were of Asian descent, and they are among a large number of Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders who have experienced racial hatred and violence in recent months. Many of the tutors and fellows in our Writing Center belong to Asian and AAPI communities, as do a majority of the students we see each day. We understand if any students need to cancel or reschedule appointments as you process the events of this week. We also encourage students to take advantage of support resources, such as those listed below.

As a Writing Center, we continue to be committed to our mission of fostering an atmosphere that promotes anti-racism, inclusion, social justice, and equality. We want to continue to combat hatred and prejudice in all its forms, including misogyny, which was very clearly a factor in Tuesday’s murders. And we always welcome input and suggestions from the broader community as we continue this important work.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mandy Suhr-Sytsma
Director of the Emory Writing Center

Dr. Levin Arnsperger
Associate Director for English Language Learning in the Writing Center
