Welch School of Art and Design offers myriad choices for undergraduate art degrees such as BA, BFA, or advanced degrees such as an MA, MFA and MAE. Our NASAD accredited School of Art and Design offers rigorous programs that offer traditional media to the highest technologies in all disciplines. From Foundation to Graduate studies, courses give each student challenging, discipline-specific training

Just announced: Go back in time with a manual slide projector and view the slides Black artists sent Larry Walker to represent their art. In connection with the Welch Galleries exhibition, “Where Being Takes Root: Works by Southern Artists from the Larry M. and Gwendolyn E. Walker Collection,” this event features Larry Walker’s slide collection from the early ‘90s, created to increase the number of African American artists in university slide libraries thereby increasing their incorporation within contemporary art history courses. Many artists in the slide collection are also part of the Walker art collection, donated in 2024-25.

Pleased to share another new faculty member and professor of practice, Dawn Trimble!

Dawn M Trimble (or Phillips) is a designer, artist and educator living in South Georgia. As a licensed interior designer with over 15 years of professional experience, she has been a team member on large and small design teams and served as lead designer on award winning projects in the south Georgia area.

As an artist, she communicates with gestural movements in non-figurative compositions. Working primarily with water-based media, Dawn allows herself to get lost in the meditative process that exists between water and color with the goal of conveying the nuance of our human experinece. She has completed residental and corporate commissions throughout the Atlanta, Georgia area.

Academically, Dawn is passionate about ideas concerning human scale and intimacy, for it is where we (as designers) establish and construct physical boundaries.

🗣️ We’re kicking off this year’s Visiting Artist & Scholar Lecture Series with internationally renowned artist and educator Rodrigo Valenzuela!

Rodrigo Valenzuela blends documentary and fiction to explore labor, migration, and Latin American sociopolitical history through a postcapitalist lens. A Guggenheim Fellow and Associate Professor at UCLA, his work has been exhibited at the New Museum, Portland Art Museum, and the Frye Art Museum, among others.

Nearly 50 educators. One powerful day of growth.

On July 10, GSU’s Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design partnered with the Georgia Art Education Association to host The First Years Experience, an intensive built for preservice and early-career art teachers.

From visual journaling to Chinese brush painting, EXLAB tours to real talk on surviving your first years in the classroom, participants left with new skills plus a community of support.

Special thanks to keynote speaker Dr. Amy Sery, our incredible facilitators, and GAEA for making it happen.

From the Atacama Desert to artist’s book. Congratulations to Ruth A. Stanford of the Welch School of Art & Design on receiving an internal research grant for “Landscapes, Portals, and Other Corners of the Universe!”

During and following a two-month artist residency in Chile, Dr. Stanford produced over 250 palm-sized gel pen drawings on black paper, intimate portraits of one of Earth’s most vast and remote landscapes. Through this work, she explores landscapes as living archives, places where cosmic time, cultural memory, and political history converge to reveal our place in a much larger story.

With this grant, she’ll publish and distribute an artist’s book at fairs across the globe, bringing the desert’s deep time, wonder, and mystery to audiences everywhere.

We’re thrilled to share that Grace Harpster, Assistant Professor of Art History at Welch School of Art & Design, has just published a new book with Cambridge University Press: “Carlo Borromeo and the Sacred Image in Sixteenth-Century Italy: A Reformer’s Itinerary.”

This milestone work, over a decade in the making, challenges long-held assumptions about the Catholic Reformation and the role of sacred images, arguing that reform increased the authority of the image rather than limiting it.

We are so proud of Grace and this extraordinary contribution to the fields of early modern art history and Renaissance studies! Congratulations!
