It’s been a busy week at ! The woodwind students gave a fabulous chamber concert this evening, a special shout out to Michael Tijerina from the oboe studio who was chosen as one of the woodwind area finalists to compete in the Honors Recital Competition, and the double reeds sounded fabulous at Tuesday’s Concert Band/SWE concert! Who’s ready for the weekend?!

It’s been a very busy week for ! The week started off with an incredible performance by featuring many of our composition students. And on Thursday visited us and brought two of her wonderful high school students for the Music Major for a Day event! That evening we enjoyed two amazing graduate conducting recitals featuring the Wind Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble. The oboes in both ensembles sounded especially amazing, but I am very biased! 🤣 Congrats to all our wonderful students!

Manning the GSU GMEA exhibit was a blast, especially because so many alum came by to visit and I got to catch up on all the amazing successes they’re having! Thank you to all my wonderful colleagues and students that make work a place I enjoy! And please note and I tore down the exhibit and lugged two wagons full of stuff plus a seven foot mannequin to the parking garage where the elevator was broken. Please send us a trophy. And make sure you send .bramlett one as well because she does an amazing job every year with the exhibit! 🤣

Two alum reunited and sent me this picture today! I LOVE this! Neil Cole and Quinten Hansen are killing it as oboists and doublers! Quinten is currently touring with the Broadway tour of “The Notebook” and Neil toured with the Broadway tour of “Elf” last year. The best part of this as their former teacher is not just their success as musicians, but the fact that they’re still friends! Go Panthers!!

It’s been a very busy first week of classes ! First up was the amazing performance of the Brahms Nonet. Why he didn’t include oboes in the scoring, we’ll never know but I’ll absolutely hold it against him. Second was a masterclass by guest clarinetist for the woodwind area. She was so helpful to our students and played a beautiful interpretation of Osborne’s “Rhapsody.” And last of all, an all-area seminar in Self-Compassion by Dr. Danielle Werle, with much needed instruction on how to have compassion for ourselves. Musicians especially struggle with this as we have to be critical of ourselves in the practice room and perform at a high level. We are now committed to practicing more self-compassion in 2026!
