Georgia State University’s College of the Arts is a new academic unit that focuses on education in arts and related media, promotes creativity and responds to the changing needs of artists, on- and off-campus. The college was fully-established in July 2017, and is comprised of the School of Music, the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design, the School of Film, Media & Theatre, the Center for Colla

borative and Innovation in the Arts (CENCIA) and the Center for Educational Partnerships from the School of Music.

Faculty News:

It was a busy summer for Dr. Alexander Freund!

In June, he spent more than a week at the University of Ljubljana teaching trumpet masterclasses, clinics and recitals—and leading a meditation and breath-work course—as part of an ongoing Erasmus exchange with Prof. Jure Gradišnik. The partnership already brought Prof. Gradišnik to GSU in fall 2025, and now has a new result: trumpet student Lovro Tavčar has come to Atlanta to begin his master's degree with Dr. Freund!

Then in July and August, Prof. Freund headed to Udine, Italy as guest faculty and performer at the Festival Music System, joining musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic, Santa Cecilia di Roma, the Monaco Symphony and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg for masterclasses, rehearsals and concerts with students from around the world.

Just announced: Go back in time with a manual slide projector and view the slides Black artists sent Larry Walker to represent their art. In connection with the Welch Galleries exhibition, “Where Being Takes Root: Works by Southern Artists from the Larry M. and Gwendolyn E. Walker Collection,” this event features Larry Walker’s slide collection from the early ‘90s, created to increase the number of African American artists in university slide libraries thereby increasing their incorporation within contemporary art history courses. Many artists in the slide collection are also part of the Walker art collection, donated in 2024-25.
