In just a few short days, a new group of economics PhD students will meet for orientation and math camp here at AYS. If you see doe-eyed people that look lost (or who look like their souls haven’t yet been crushed under the weight of the dismal science), introduce yourself and give them some encouragement! Under no circumstances are you to clue them in on the horrors they are about to endure. (Finding out for yourself is half the fun!)

Some students have addressed concerns with the current proposed tax plan, and its affect on graduate school education. The following response has been put together by concerned graduate students, and may not reflect the opinions of the University as a whole:

The bill is called H.R. 1 (hr1). It has been introduced to into the House of Representatives. Its committee is the Ways and Means. The section that is most vital to graduate students is the repeal of section 117(d). If this is repealed our tuition waiver is counted as INCOME taxable income. This would be catastrophic for us. Some of us could see 200%+ increases in our FEDERAL tax bill in 2019 (in the economics department at GSU some students have already projected the increase in taxes to be up to 600%). Here are the steps we are taking to try to get this struck from the current bill: (1) Call the state's US senator at their STATES office (2) Tell them that you are a concerned citizen (tax-paying graduate student, relative, friend, coworker) who implores them to keep section 117(d) in the current tax code. (3) Call the senators DC office and asked to speak to the legislative director/assistant and repeat the same thing.

Please take a few minutes out of your day to help out with issue. If section 117(d) gets repealed many graduate students will no longer be able to pursue their current education. Don't let taxes stop us from having scientists and doctors.
