Students in Georgia Tech’s VIP Energy Solutions course led by Dr. Jennifer Chirico and Dr. Jairo Garcia.

On April 14, students completed a solar installation with battery storage at the Institute’s new in-vessel composter. This standalone renewable microgrid helps power fans, tools, and equipment that support compost operations using 100% renewable energy.

Thank you to the students and instructors whose work continues to support hands-on sustainability and energy solutions across campus!

Help Us “Shut the Sash” to Save Energy and create safer lab environments. 🔬

Fume hoods are ventilated enclosures used in laboratories to protect users from fumes and vapors by removing air from the space. These devices are essential for safety, but they also use a lot of energy — a single fume hood can use the same amount of energy in a year as three to four houses! By engaging in the “Shut the Sash” campaign and closing fume hoods when not in use, you can reduce energy use, increase efficiency, and create a safer lab environment.

Press the link in our bio to request “Shut the Sash” fume hood stickers for your lab and learn more about sustainable lab practices!

The Office of Sustainability is advancing Georgia Tech’s campus circular economy by giving new life to bottles from the lost-and-found. If they go unclaimed, they’re collected, sanitized, and branded with a sticker explaining their new circular journey.

Visit us at events this fall to grab one and keep a bottle out of the landfill! ♻️

Georgia Tech is working toward zero waste, and composting plays a key role! This graphic shows campus composting growth over time.

Since 2017, we’ve significantly increased the amount of food waste diverted from the landfill, thanks largely to the ongoing efforts of Georgia Tech Dining Services.

Programs like Leanpath, RacoonEyes, and Green Forks have also helped us reduce and redirect food waste across campus.

As we move toward our zero waste goal, we’re proud to celebrate the work of our partners who help keep more material out of the landfill every year. 🙌

We recently welcomed sustainability teams from Kennesaw State, UGA, and Georgia State to campus! 🌿

Part of our ongoing collaboration with University System of Georgia schools, the visit included tours of the Kendeda Building and EcoCommons, along with a conversation on Georgia Tech’s Climate Action Plan, emissions tracking, energy use, and circular economy efforts.

These peer exchanges help us share ideas and move forward together on statewide sustainability goals. 💡
