Memorial Day was formally established in 1868 by Brother John Alexander Logan, a Freemason and Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was created to honor the graves of fallen soldiers and has since evolved into a national day of remembrance for all who have given their lives in service to the nation. According to Brother Enrique Rivera, the principles reflected in Memorial Day - honor, sacrifice, fidelity, brotherly love, and remembrance - are the same virtues taught within Freemasonry.
