GSU Geosciences is the place to be for cutting edge research and education into the world around us. Our students, faculty, and staff are engaged in studying the geology and geochemistry of the natural world, physical and human geography, and challenges faced by communities and cities and their solutions. In addition to our disciplinary scholarship and education in Earth Systems, People Places & E

nvironment, and Cities, we also offer cross-cutting expertise in Geospatial Science using the latest GIS and mobile technologies.

Georgia Patterson (B.S. 2026, current M.S. Geoscience) spent her summer in Southeast Alaska, working as a bicycle tour guide for Sockeye Cycle Co in Skagway, Alaska. She spent her workday teaching groups about the area’s history, geography, climate, and wildlife as they biked through the coastal temperate rainforest of Dyea or down the glacially carved White Pass. She spent her off hours hiking, cycling, camping, and volunteering with NPS to survey coastal birds along the uppermost portion of the Lynn canal. This experience taught her new ways to appreciate the environment and ways she can share that appreciation wherever she is.

Our next summer story is from Eileen Mburu, M.S. in Geosciences. Eileen won first place in the 2026 Georgia Geospatial Association Virtual Map Competition! Later in the summer, she traveled to San Diego to participate in the ESRI User Conference as a Student Assistant. Her winning GGA map, "The Geography of Climate Change Discourse in the United State: Public Perceptions from Twitter (2015-2019)" was featured in the conference's Interactive Map Gallery! She was able to engaged with the latest GIS technology at the world's largest geospatial gathering and connect with GIS practitioners and researchers leading in the field. We are excited to share some of the amazing things our students got up to this summer! Jake Ferus, M.S. in Geosciences, arch Center with the Disaster Response Coordination System (DRCS) where he helped refine and construct reliable processes to ensure NASA's mission and support Emergency Manager's needs. He was able to provide Earth observation imagery for the Venezuela Earthquakes, Typhoon Bavi, and the Colorado Wildfires. This internship inspired new passions within stem, highlighted a love for disaster management, and taught how work is structured within the federal government.

Geoscience faculty toured the Georgia Aquarium this week to learn about their water treatment processes before putting our heads together to prepare for this fall. We can't wait to welcome all our students on Monday and kick off a great fall semester!

Dr. Richard Milligan led a team of authors including Dr. Katherine Hankins and Dr. Sarah Ledford along with Dr. Na'Taki Osborne Jelks from Spelman and Dr. Tyler McCreary at Florida State in this new paper in Environment and Planning F. In this paper they place recent green stormwater infrastructure projects in Atlanta in the context of historical geographies. They find that current sustainability discourses and practices reproduce rather than repair the long history of whiteness in environmental governance in Atlanta. The Community-Soil-Air-Water learning ecosystem in the Department of Geosciences was lucky enough to host 8 amazing undergraduate researchers this summer though our REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program. Students worked with community members to co-develop research projects around green space, household water insecurity, and air quality. Students joined from GSU, Spelman, Mount Holyoke, Cornell, Smith, Arizona State, Weber State, and University of Minnesota Duluth. Congratulations to Lynesia Denson for successfully defending her M.S. thesis this week! Her thesis was titled “Moved and Made in the Logistical Fix of Clayton County”. Lynesia is heading to Rutgers this fall to start her PhD in Geography! We are so proud!
