Young Black Thinkers Society

Young Black Thinkers Society Originated as an AUC Philosophy club, this group meets once a week to discuss challenging and relevant topics facing young Black thinkers today.

YOUNG- This is a student-initiated, student-led and student-maintained organization

BLACK- This organization calls the predominately Black Atlanta University Center Home (which by no means discourages non-Black identifying membership or participation). Also, the organization will dedicate one meeting per month to the understanding and discussion of a (young) Black thinker. THINKERS- This organiza

tion consists of critical thinking persons. The objective of the group is to foster learning and communication through the expression of ideas and ideologies in a coherent and logical manner. SOCIETY- This group maintains its cohesion through the unified goals and desires of its members, who all hold the importance of critical thinking and knowledgeable livelihood in high esteem.

Good day Thinkers,

Today will mark Whitney's and my last meeting as Young Black Thinkers Society co-chairs. As founders of the organization, we are particularly invested in the forthcoming meeting, and hope to leave Spelman and YBTS both in a way that mirrors the the time we spent here: surrounded by those peers as well as faculty and staff members who have supported and encouraged us on a regular basis. For this reason, we invite you to join us as we reflect on the past 3 years, say our farewells, and look forward to the future as we welcome the new administrative faces of the Young Black Thinkers Society into their roles.

The meeting will be today, 24 April 2012 at 6pm in Cosby 440. Food will be served

Thanks so much for your continued interest and investment in our organization as a vessel of Black expression in the AUC.

Best,
Chaina

Morehouse NAACP, YBTS, and SSIC will come together tonight! Come to Manley Atrium from 6-9 to join the letter and petition campaign for Trayvon Martin

Thinkers,

This week, we're also trying something different. The Trayvon Martin case provides an opportunity for discussion and a springboard for tangible activism. We hope that we'll see some of you at the rally today:

Rally for Trayvon Martin
Georgia State Capitol Building
TODAY at 5:30pm March 26, 2012

As for the meeting tomorrow, the topic of conversation will be, "'Never Again': Trayvon Martin and the Activists' Imperative." This meeting will be in conjunction with Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity, so we need our members to show up and show out.

We will be shooting a video with student input, to show that the AUC, specifically Spelman College is still engaged in these issues in the way that our predecessors once were. We need bodies for this video, so bring friends and fellow activists!

Come ready in your hoodies, and get Fired Up for what we hope will be the most dynamic meeting all year! It will definitely be the most important meeting.

What if Africans had colonized Europe? What if Africa was home to the world’s most technologically advanced countries? What if the world’s most powerful and revered army was in Africa?

This week, we are excited to try something new! Many of you may know of the series Black Panther, which showcases a strong black Marvel superhero, produced in part by Stan Lee. Tonight, we'll be showing several clips from the series, and then having a short discussion on various meanings of Power in general and Black Power in particular.

Bring a friend! Same place, same time (Tuesday at 6, Cosby 439).

See you then!

Keeping in line with the mandate of the Young Black Thinkers' Society, we can't help but pass on the information about the Walter Rodney Symposium at our own Woodruff Library this month! http://walterrodneyfoundation.org/annual_symposium

Since 2004, an annual symposium is held in Atlanta, Georgia during the week of Walter Rodney's birthday (23 March). The goal is to bring together scholars, researchers, activists, students and the community to discuss contemporary issues from a Rodney per

Thinkers!

This week, we are excited to try something new! Many of you may know of the series Black Panther, which showcases a strong black Marvel superhero. Produced in part by Stan Lee (creator of Spiderman, Hulk, and many other prominent superheroes). For those of you who are familiar with Storm, from X-Men, Jill Scott provides the voice for the character. Tuesday, we'll be showing an episode (they're rather short-- only 20 minutes or so), and then having a short discussion.

Here's the Marvel Universe bio of Black Panther (T'Challa): http://marvel.com/universe/Black_Panther_(T'Challa)
Here the IMDB about it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441105/

We hope to have a packed room for this event! Bring a friend! Same place, same time (Tuesday at 6, Cosby 439).

See you then,

Good afternoon. Thinkers!

Get ready for tomorrow's meeting (March 13th), where we will be discussing the "white savior" as the contemporary "white man's burden."

This discussion topic is inspired by the media blitz, which successfully educated hundreds of thousands of global citizens about the atrocities happening in East and Central Africa.

We'd love to talk about the Invisible Children campaign, but feel like the discussion might be overdone, and would instead like to broaden the subject!

Can't wait to see you tomorrow at 6pm in Cosby 439. Same place, same time.

Whitney

Hey thinkers! I know we didn't have a meeting today because of midterms, but I have another announcement for you all!

Spelman Philosophy and religious studies majors/minors, we have a potential faculty member coming to Spelman on Wednesday (29th), and Dr. Williams would love if some of you could come have lunch in the caf with us at 1pm. It should be a great opportunity to get to know this person!

If you don't have a meal plan, let me know so I can get the department to pay for your meal. Facebook me, or come by the office to find me tomorrow morning if you're interested.

Good day, Thinkers!

As you may know, each month, we spend one meeting focusing on a Black thinker or a particular school of Black thought. This week, we will be discussing DuBois's 'Talented Tenth' as it relates to modern Black American society.

Do we have a need for a talented tenth in our community? Who represents the current talented 10th in our community? Does today's talented tenth fit DuBois's description?

These and other questions to be tackled tomorrow, 21 February 2012. Cosby 439. See you there!

-Whitney and Chaina

The Negro race, like all races, is going to be saved by its exceptional men. The problem of education, then, among Negroes must first of all deal with the Talented Tenth; it is the problem of developing the Best of this race that they may guide the Mass away from the contamination and death of the W...
