Wonderful Liederabend last night with amazing performances by students from Prof. Paul Buchholz’s senior seminar on German songwriting with accompaniment by Prof. Buchholz on acoustic guitar and a special cameo and translation by Prof. Didem Uca. Students Joanna Louis-Ugbo, Henry Donath, Junze Chen, Julia Peng, Taesha Marecheau-Miller, Rui Lin, and Rowan Walther recited, sang, and rapped an impressive array of songs, ranging from Minnelieder to Volkslieder to Balladen to Anatolian Rock.

The Department hosted award-winning author and current University of Georgia Max Kade Writer-in-Residence Jan Brandt for several special events on Friday.

Students in Dr. Uca's German 202 course discussed his story "Der Familientermin" and asked him questions about his life as a writer, the course topic "coming of age," and growing up in a small town in East Frisia versus life in the big city of Berlin. They even learned a few words of the East Frisian Low German dialect!

After lunch with a small group of students, Jan led an enriching and fun German creative writing workshop. Many thanks to the American Association of Teachers of German, which provided a chapter grant from Delta Phi Alpha National German Honor Society to sponsor Jan's visit.

Congratulations to Joanna Louis-Ugbo, graduating German Studies and Biology double-major, who successfully defended her German Studies Honors Thesis, Sonic Citizenship: Podcasts and the Making of Afro-German Community, receiving High Honors. Joanna balanced her thesis research with intensive coursework for her Biology major, preparing to apply for medical school, and serving as President of Emory German Culture Club, among many other involvements across campus. Her thesis committee, Drs. Paul Buchholz (advisor) and Didem Uca from German Studies and Dr. Crystal R. Sanders from African American Studies, commends Joanna on building on insights from Black German Studies scholarship to analyze this emerging medium. Joanna has been a vital and active member of our German Studies community, and we will miss her so much!
