Spelman College English Department

Spelman College English Department The Spelman College English Department provides all students with opportunities to cultivate critical thinking and communication skills.

The Spelman College English Department is dedicated to providing a rigorous learning community that prepares Spelman students to master the arts of writing, reading, rhetoric, and communication. In particular, we provide all Spelman students with a core curriculum in general college-level composition as well as a variety of courses that satisfy Spelman's distribution requirements. Meanwhile, the n

ewly revised English Major/minor, and our Writing and Film Studies minors, features a diverse curriculum that prepares students for a wide range of occupations seeking candidates capable of demonstrating clarity, creativity, and critical thinking through impeccable writing and communication skills. The English major/minor allows students to choose from two areas of deep study that introduces them to the robust scope of narrative: Textual Studies or Writing Studies. Textual Studies enables students to explore and critique a variety of literature from different periods, whereas Writing as an area of deep study will train students in multimodal composition/writing research and rhetorical practices. The writing minor is an excellent addition to any major at Spelman College because it further cultivates students' writing and communication skills. Consequently, students are more adaptable to complex writing genres such as academic research, creative, and professional writing. The Film and Visual Culture Minor also prepares students for success in a global information economy. These courses engage the power of visual representation and prepare students to identify and more comprehensively articulate the historical, theoretical, and socio-political implications and significance of media and culture.

I shared this recent piece by Alexis Pauline Gumbs with my students. (Alexis has visited Spelman several times—and especially the Spelman Archives, while doing research for her most recent book: "Survival Is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde.")

I hope this resonates: https://www.southerncultures.org/article/stay-strong/
