Since it is still Women's History Month, we wanted to recognize more exceptional Theta alumnae!

First, Agnes de Mille of the Beta Xi chapter at UCLA was a choreographer. Agnes de Mille's first ballet, Black Ritual, was the first ever performed by black dancers. De Mille transformed the world of musical comedy forever with her innovative choreography in Broadway productions such as Rodeo, Oklahoma, Carousel, Brigadoon, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Next, Jo Anne Gunderson Carner of the Delta Epsilon chapter at Arizona State is the only woman to win the USGA Girls' Junior, U.S. Women's Amateur, and U.S. Women's Open titles. She was also the first person ever to win three different USGA championship events. Carner also has 43 wins on the LPGA tour between 1971 and 1985.

Finally, Helen Hull Jacobs of the Omega chapter at UC Berkeley ranked first in the Top Ten Women of Tennis four years in succession (1932-1935). She also was the first to be named Female Athlete of the Year (1933). Jacobs was U.S. Singles and Doubles Champion four years in a row (1932-1935) and Wimbledon Champion in 1936. She was also the first woman to break with tradition and wear man-tailored shorts at Wimbledon. She wrote numerous books over her lifetime.

These are just a few more of the inspirational women we are so proud to look up to! Happy Women's History Month!!!

During Women's History Month, we wanted to recognize some of the incredible Theta alumnae who have proven how incredible and exceptional we as women are!

First, Mary Ritter Beard from the Alpha Chapter at DePauw University was a very active women's rights advocate and the first historian to write about the roles women play in society. She is considered to be the "founding mother" of American women’s history. She laid the fundamental groundwork for the field of women’s studies.

Next, Nancy Landon Kassebaum from the Kappa chapter at Kansas is known for her ability to build coalitions and for her practical approach to fiscal issues. Kassebaum was the first woman to chair a major United States Senate committee, the Committee on Labor and Human Resources. She served from 1978-1997.

Another woman, Margaret Floy Washburn from the Iota chapter at Cornell, was initially denied admittance as a graduate student to Columbia University because she was a woman. She then went to Cornell University instead and in 1894 she became the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in Psychology. A Psychologist of extraordinarily high stature, she became the first woman president of the American Psychological Association. (The second was elected 50 years later.) Margaret Floy Washburn was also elected to the rarefied National Academy of Sciences.

These are just a few of the incredible women who are alumnae of Kappa Alpha Theta. We are so proud of these women, and all our members, each and everyday! Happy Women's History Month, everyone!
