The Center for Urban Language Learning and Teaching (CULTR) at Georgia State University is proud to be selected the first Title VI Language Resource Center in the Southeast, placing Georgia State University prominently at the forefront of international language instruction and research in the region. Through collaboration with policymakers, private industry, and public educators, CULTR offers new

pathways for underrepresented students that leads to more diverse employment opportunities in diplomacy, international business, education, public health, and more. In the heart of Atlanta, CULTR is particularly well positioned to establish a wide spectrum of collaborations across education, business, and government that advocate a common goal to make language learning more accessible to all populations.

As you may know, the U.S. Department of Education has not yet released the funding provided for Title VI and Fulbright-Hays. Title VI is the program that funds the Center For Urban Language Teaching and Research which supports work on professional development, career readiness for Georgia State University students and high school students across the metro Atlanta area, language conferences, language advocacy, and the development of instructional materials for the less-commonly taught languages in the U.S.

In collaboration with the National Humanities Alliance, the Coalition for International Education has set up an Action Alert in which any citizen may urge their Senators and House Member to contact the Director of OMB and Secretary of ED to release and disburse these funds immediately. The Alert contains a letter from you to your Senators and House Member. You also may include in the letter additional information you would like to share about the importance of CULTR to American interests and what would be lost if they were eliminated.

CULTR is excited to welcome our new summer intern, Céleste Kyler-Reese, joining us through our partnership with Georgia State University’s linguistics program. This internship offers students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting our mission and projects. We look forward to collaborating with her this summer!

"Language learning has changed my view of the world. It promotes empathy, connects different cultures, and opens new doors. As someone working towards a TEFL certificate, CULTR’s dedication to expanding access to language education, creating more learning opportunities for language teachers, and raising awareness of the national need for language education aligns with my career goals and values."

CULTR's director, Dr. Hakyoon Lee, attended the 30th anniversary of the American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK) Conference, from June 18th to June 20th in Honolulu, Hawaii. CULTR is a proud partner of this conference, and we support two first-time teachers each year to attend and engage in professional development. This year, we were thrilled to support Hwasun Lee and YoonJu Lee in their journey.

CULTR was proud to co-present at the conference with a session titled “Creating Global Communities to Expand Opportunities to Learn Korean.” This presentation showcased an exciting multi-institutional partnership among Georgia State’s CULTR, the University of Hawai‘i NFLRC, NCVPS, and Sejong Global High School in South Korea. Together, the team is developing virtual Korean I and II courses tailored for U.S. high school students.
