Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business

Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business Empowering the leaders of tomorrow to create sustainable businesses and communities. The Ray C.

Anderson Center for Sustainable Business aims to accelerate the development and adoption of sustainable business practices through educational programs, high-impact research, and industry engagement. The Center supports and draws upon the research and instruction of faculty dedicated to sustainability integration and sustainability-focused innovation in three areas:

1) Business Value, Innovatio

n, and Competitive Advantage – Strategies in this area promote long-term economic, environmental and social value.

2) Operations, Supply Chain Management, and the Circular Economy – Sustainable operations strategies reduce risk and create value by capitalizing across entire value chains and creating new business and collaboration models.

3) Human Rights, Ethics, and Transparency – Strategies in this area support responsible decision-making, reporting, and addressing social welfare locally and globally. Educational programs serve current and future managers, entrepreneurs, executives, and community leaders. Students gain knowledge, experience and a global understanding of issues and opportunities at the intersection of business and sustainability. The Center also functions as a network hub for students, faculty, alumni, and practitioners. We catalyze new discoveries, ideas and collaborations by enabling connections on the Georgia Tech campus, in Atlanta, regionally, and even globally. In doing so, we help businesses and business leaders have a positive effect on the communities they touch.

"I remember picking up the book, The Entrepreneurial State, by Mariana Mazzucato. The premise of the book is that a lot of people think private investment supports the most groundbreaking and successful companies. However, Mazzucato says that when you look at that data, groundbreaking work is often the result of government investment... When I read her views on the ROI for green technology, such as renewable energy, I realized there was an opportunity in front of me. When I saw the Al Gore documentary, I had asked myself, Is there anything I can do about climate change? The book presented an opportunity to do something about it, to make a living doing it, and to feel like I’m doing something “more” with my career."

In our latest profile on sustainability leaders among Georgia Tech alumni, we spotlight Naveed Ahmad (MBA ’19). Naveed is advisor of Operational Planning and Customer Service at Southern California Edison and president of the company’s sustainability business resource group, EcoIQ. Naveed talks about his career journey, why utility companies are ground zero for making all companies more sustainable, and how we can create momentum for positive change by “building a bigger tent.”
