Atlanta NextGen Neuro is a collaborative group of faculty at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology, with the mission of developing experimental and theoretical foundations for the next decade of computational and systems neuroscience research, and of growing the community of like-minded researchers in the Atlanta area.
On March 20-21, 2020, we are hosting a 1.5 day locomotion workshop titled “Individuality in locomotion – from equations to interventions”. This workshop will span topics related to the variability and individuality of locomotion as a movement pattern across multiple species, ranging from insects to animals to humans. The workshop will serve as a unique venue to discuss diverse topical content areas including experimental studies in human and clinical models, computational theories, neural control, evolutionary perspectives, and machine learning methods in the context of locomotion. We hope to brainstorm leading-edge, cross-disciplinary research strategies to fulfil our long-range vision of developing a comprehensive understanding of locomotion.
Dates: Friday March 20th 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday March 21st from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm
Location: Emory Conference Center
Program and Speakers: The workshop program will feature presentations and tutorials from leaders in the field, including speakers from across the country (Bing Brunton, Monica Daley, Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal), the Atlanta area (Dan Goldman, Gordon Berman, Jennifer Reiser, Greg Sawicki, Young-Hui Chang), as well as tutorials on relevant topics such as DeepLabCut. Please encourage your trainees to present at the poster session.
Please save the date, and help us spread the word about this exciting workshop. We look forward to participation from you and your lab members.

POST DOCS WANTED!!

Applications are invited for the 2020 class of Postdoctoral Fellows in the Theory and Modeling of Living Systems (TMLS) at Emory University. TMLS (livingtheory.emory.edu) is a highly interdisciplinary initiative connecting theorists across departments who are working on theoretical understanding of broad biological phenomena. Our research includes, but is not limited to, information processing in neural and cellular systems, quantifying and modeling animal behavior, understanding the dynamics of infection and immune response, forecasting evolution, predicting the dynamical and mechanical properties of dense tissue, and statistical inference from biological data. Fellows would have wide latitude to choose which problems to work on while collaborating broadly with TMLS faculty.

Job Description:

Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

Title: Inferring the statistical physics of collective biological behaviour
Abstract: The coordinated flight of bird flocks is a striking example of collective behavior in biology. Using 3D positions and velocities of large natural flocks of starlings, I will show how to build an explicit mapping of flock behaviour onto statistical physics models of magnetism. Learning the parameters of these models allows us to infer the local rules of alignment, and to reveal that flocks are poised close to a critical point, where susceptibility to external perturbations is maximal. Extending the approach to alignment dynamics shows that flocks are in a state of local quasi-equilibrium.
