We're incredibly happy to spotlight Brenda Washington, Political Science Class of 2026. πŸŽ“

Brenda spent 20 years serving as a U.S. Army combat medic before transitioning into real estate and, ultimately, back to the classroom. She started at Perimeter College, transferred to the Atlanta Campus, and found her way to our department, where a pre-law concentration and courses on courts, public policy, and civil liberties set her on a clear path: law school.

Two experiences in our department made all the difference. First, the Maymester Judicial Field School, taught by lecturer Stephanie Kerce, brought Brenda into Atlanta courtrooms and face-to-face with legal professionals. This experience led her to decide she wanted to advocate for the constitutional rights of the most vulnerable. Second, a Georgia Legislative Internship Program placement at the Capitol gave her a front-row seat to how policy actually gets made, the strategy, the negotiation, and the people behind every bill.

"Getting detailed insight into the disparities in funding and resources for public defense ultimately helped me decide that I wanted to advocate for the constitutional rights of the most vulnerable," she said.

This spring, Brenda walks across the stage not just as a graduate, but as a veteran, a mother, and a woman with a vision. We're honored that political science was part of her story. Congratulations, Brenda! πŸ‘

Help Send GSU Mock Trial to the National Championship! πŸŽ“βš–οΈ

The Mock Trial program at GSU is having its most successful year yet! For the first time, THREE of our teams earned bids at regional competitions, making Georgia State one of only 15 schools in the nation to achieve this.

Now, 20 of our dedicated undergraduates are preparing to represent the Political Science Department and the College of Arts & Sciences at the Opening Round Championship Series in Memphis and the AMTA Nationals in Washington, D.C.

Our students have the talent, but we need your help to cover the costs of hotels, van rentals, and airfare. We are currently at 22% of our $5,000 goal!

How you can support our students:
πŸ”Ή $10 – Keeps students hydrated with water bottles.
πŸ”Ή $30 – Covers competition lunch for one student.
πŸ”Ή $100 – Covers gas for one rental van.
πŸ”Ή $150 – Covers a hotel room for four competitors.
πŸ”Ή $350 – Pays the tournament registration fee for one team.

Every gift helps these future attorneys compete on the national stage. Please consider donating or sharing our mission!

Kira Slevin is using every opportunity at Georgia State to prepare for a future in law β€” and to make a difference. βš–οΈπŸ’™

A first-generation American and Atlanta native, Kira is a Honors College student majoring in political science with a concentration in pre-law and a minor in sociology. She's already gaining hands-on experience working with attorneys handling impact litigation β€” cases that aim to bring about systemic change.

Through student groups like Mock Trial, where she is now vice president, and her role in founding the Filipino Student Association, Kira has developed into a confident leader with a clear goal: to advocate for a fairer, more equitable criminal justice system.

β€œI want to help people and create social change within our legal system,” she says. β€œGSU helped me come out of my shell, and I’ve found my purpose here.”
