FIRST IN BUSINESS EDUCATION

In this week of October back in 1883, Clark College, our founding institution, established one of the nation’s first business colleges. This milestone marked the beginning of undergraduate business education at what is now the Clark Atlanta University School of Business (CAUSB).

Among the first students were entrepreneurs Dr. Thomas W. Haigler and L.J. Price, who embodied the spirit of relentless optimism, resilient focus, and resourceful entrepreneurship.

Dr. Haigler’s personal motto was “Grit, Grace, and Greenbacks.” He opened his own drugstore in Chattanooga in 1890 and by 1898 organized the Chattanooga National Medical College, the state’s third African American medical school.

L.J. Price was appointed the first federal postmaster for South Atlanta in 1889, serving for more than 25 years while operating the Price General Store near the old Clark University campus. His legacy endures through Luther J. Price Middle School in Atlanta, which proudly bears his name.

Today’s BizPanthers continue this practice of turning challenges into opportunities through UPLIFT and Enterprising Ingenuity. Together, we are shaping a better, more prosperous world.
