Swing Stories: Jazz and swing music moved from dance floors to concert halls for the first time with bandleader Benny Goodman’s legendary January 16, 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall. The King of Swing solidified jazz as a respectable genre in popular music with a two and a half hour concert featuring contemporary numbers like Count Basie’s “One O’ Clock Jump” alongside older Dixieland Jazz pieces like “Sensation Rag.” Later on, a two disc LP of the concert released in 1950 sold over a million copies and set several firsts for jazz albums.

Swing Stories: The technique of stride piano was developed for ragtime, but it came to jazz through the efforts of talented yet largely forgotten musicians like James P. Johnson. He wrote the music for the 1923 song “Charleston” to accompany the already well-known dance in a Broadway show known as “Runnin’ Wild”. Johnson’s composition established the characteristic beat of the Charleston and popularized the dance as a nationwide trend through the end of the 1920s. Elements of Charleston would also influence Lindy Hop, which, like Charleston, had its cultural origins in African-American communities before achieving mainstream popularity. Check back in two weeks for more swing history or drop by this Tuesday's (2/24) lesson to learn the Charleston!

Swing Stories: The Savoy Ballroom was the “Heartbeat of Harlem” in the words of poet Langston Hughes, and during its 30+ year existence it was the center of New York swing culture. Groups like Whitney’s Lindy Hoppers went professional after beginning at the Savoy, and Band Battles in the late 1930s between Chick Webb, Benny Goodman and Count Basie achieved legendary status. Additionally, the Ballroom's notable non-discrimination policy throughout its existence allowed talent to flourish in contrast to many other clubs of the period. While the Savoy closed and was tragically demolished in 1959, a commemorative plaque at the location and a deep archive of photographs and recordings help keep the memory of this cultural icon alive.

Thanks for reading and check back here every other Thursday for more swing history!
