Luther J. Battiste, III 74L is the recipient of the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award.

From making history as one of the first African Americans elected to the Columbia City Council since Reconstruction to serving as the first African American National President of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), Battiste has spent his career breaking barriers.

A founding shareholder of Johnson, Toal & Battiste, P.A., Luther’s decades of public service and courtroom mastery have earned him Columbia’s highest honors, including a dedicated city monument and plaza. We are proud to honor his historic legacy of leadership with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Established in 1985, the Distinguished Alumni Award is given to an alumna/us who embodies the values of the school and has demonstrated extraordinary achievement in the legal profession and in service to society. Recipients will be recognized at the 2026 Emory Law Alumni Awards in October.

On Thursday, Aug. 13, our newest 1Ls took the Professionalism Oath in Tull Auditorium, pledging to carry integrity, honesty, and a commitment to justice into law school and their future careers.

Leading the ceremony was Emory University Interim President, Justice Leah Ward Sears 80L, the first Black woman to serve as chief justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia.

For these students, the oath marks the beginning of a professional journey guided by a clear compass and grounded in the values that will shape how they learn, lead, and practice law.
