Emory University Herbarium

Emory University Herbarium The Emory University Herbarium mission is to serve as a botanical research & education resource & foster understanding of the human-nature interface.

Welcome to the Emory University Herbarium! We are home to more than 20,000 plant specimens, dating back to the early 1900s. The majority of our collection is composed of plants from the southeast USA, but new collection efforts are expanding our reach as far as the Mediterranean and Australia! Other exciting activities ongoing at the herbarium include our digitization project. With the support of

a generous donation, we will be able to make our dream of capturing digital images and databasing the entire collection a reality by 2017! These digital images of our specimens will add great value to the collection by increasing global access to this amazing resource. We aim to incorporate these resources into botanical research and educational outreach initiatives at Emory and beyond.

Celebrating Michael's outstanding research journey!! Michael presented his poster at the Emory Undergraduate Research Symposium, highlighting his work on Ethnobotanical Continuity and changes in Medicinal plants in Fernbank Forest with a focus on Muscogee and Cherokee knowledge alongside historical herbarium collections. Even more exciting just a few weeks ago he earned Best Poster Award at the SABS conference for presenting this research. A big than you to the Garden Club of America and the Emory Pathway Center for supporting his work through their generous funding.
Congratulations, Michael well deserved and excited to see where your research goes next!

So proud to see Emory Herbarium student presenting her poster at the ASB meeting in Mobile, Alabama!
Her research integrates taxonomic, phylogenetic, and chemical approaches to clearly differentiate poisonous Veratrum (false hellebore) from edible ramps (Allium tricoccum). This work is an important step toward preventing dangerous plant misidentifications and improving foraging safety.
