Camp War Eagle is finally here!! We’re so excited to welcome the incoming freshman class to Auburn.
Compared to many Auburn traditions such as the eagle flight, rolling Toomer’s Corner, Tiger Walk, and Callouts, Camp War Eagle is a relatively newer addition to the Auburn experience.
Camp War Eagle, Auburn’s primary orientation program for first-year students, began in 1994 at a 4-H camp in Columbiana, Alabama, with 150 students and 15 upperclassmen leaders. The idea came from then-Auburn President William Muse as “an attempt to impart to freshmen an understanding of the Auburn spirit,” emphasizing Auburn’s strong sense of tradition and family.
Many elements of today’s Camp War Eagle reflect the original camp, including the importance of the students serving in the role of Camp Counselor. Just like in the first sessions of Camp War Eagle more than 30 years ago, Counselors today prepare the incoming students for their transition to college and while doing so, deepen their own love and appreciation for Auburn. Today, more than 70 counselors and eight head counselors welcome over 6,000 new students and nearly 8,000 of their family members and guests through 12 summer sessions.
Many elements of today’s Camp War Eagle mirror the original camp, including the pep rally featuring cheerleaders, Aubie and Auburn traditions inside Jordan-Hare Stadium — now considered a rite of passage for incoming students. Since 1994, the program has grown alongside Auburn’s student population. Today, more than 60 counselors and seven head counselors welcome over 5,000 new students and families through 12 summer sessions.
