graduate Aaron Wright ’03 ’04 and graduate Nate Justiss ‘05 first met in elementary school, bonded through years of playing soccer, then reconnected at Auburn University as roommates, where their friendship deepened alongside the foundations of two successful careers.

Their first collaboration came in 2004 when Justiss, founder of award-winning product design company Distil Union, designed the original logo for Wright’s company the Construction Channel, and since then, their collaboration has been less formal but equally meaningful: a decades-long exchange of encouragement, critique and shared ideas. That spirit was renewed earlier this year during a spontaneous trip through Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Tokyo, guided by their self-appointed motto: “No Edits, No Expectations.”

The trip became both reunion and design study that reinforced lessons first sparked at Auburn—stay curious, challenge assumptions and remain open to new ways of thinking—and never let go of the friends made along the way.

An interdisciplinary team from Auburn University’s College of Architecture, Design and Construction was awarded $875,000 by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Gulf Research Program to help Gulf Coast communities build healthful, resilient and thriving futures.

“Ready to Adapt: Building the Working Rural Coast through Design” is a project focused on rural working coast communities that need resources and tools to adapt to intensifying natural disasters and the socioeconomic disruptions they trigger: rising poverty, housing unaffordability, displacement and poor public health.

The team is being led by the Landscape Infrastructure Design Lab and Rural Studio - Auburn University‘s Front Porch Initiative in partnership with SCAPE. In this next phase, the team aims to deliver implementable design guidance for a partner community while working with the Gulf Research Program and the Bold Solutions Network to identify additional support that can scale the Ready to Adapt approach to other rural working coast communities around the Gulf.
