Calling all AU Alumni!

The AU Academic Sustainability Program has invited S3A members to participate in a panel discussion with her Sustainability capstone students!

The panel will take place virtually on April 17th from 4 to 6:45pm CT. They especially want to chat with professionals who received the Sustainability Minor while attending AU.

Let us know in the comments or a message if you're interested in helping students learn more about careers in Sustainability.

Don't miss your chance to nominate an outstanding alum (this could be yourself!) for the Spirit of Sustainability Awards!

The Auburn University Spirit of Sustainability Awards recognize the accomplishments of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who exemplify the Auburn spirit by promoting sustainability on campus or in a community along any point of the Sustainability Compass: nature, economics, society, and wellbeing. A panel of five judges will select recipients based on their motivation and commitment to sustainability, impact on behalf of sustainability, and the degree to which others were engaged and involved. Nominations of individuals or groups may be submitted via the awards website, and self-nominations will be accepted. The nomination period will close at 11:59 pm on January 31.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the 3rd Annual zero-waste in-person tailgate tomorrow for the Auburn vs. New Mexico game! Please join us to share food, drinks, and get to know others who care about sustainability.

This a reminder that we are also hosting our first ever virtual tailgate and watch party! If you can't make it to Auburn for the in-person tailgate, join us for a virtual watch party. Starting tomorrow please join S3A for our first summer book club! We'll be reading All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis by author Katharine Wilkinson.

We will meet 3 times on July 1st, July 22nd, and August 12th from 7-8pm CT on zoom. The first meeting on 7/1 will be a kickoff to get to know each other and prepare to read the book. You can join that meeting by clicking the link below.

More details about how many pages to read by the 2nd and 3rd meetings will be shared after the kickoff.

Please let us know if the cost of obtaining a book is restrictive to your participation in this book club and we will do our best to find a solution so you can join us. And feel free to invite other alumni or AU community members who might be interested, all are welcome.

Our S3A members have an opportunity to support sustainability in Auburn's strategic planning, which will shape the university for the next decade. As alumni we can use our voices to demonstrate that sustainability is critically important to the Auburn Family. Please see the link below from the Auburn University Office of Sustainability which contains the white paper for Sustainability and the sign-on form to show your support! We encourage you to read the white paper and consider signing in support for sustainability as a strategic imperative at Auburn University by Monday, January 15, 2024.

"Hello!

On behalf of AU RISE (Auburn University's Resilience, Innovation, Sustainability, & Engagement), an ad-hoc committee of the University Senate made up of faculty, staff, students, and alumni, we invite you to engage in the university's strategic planning process. The new strategic plan will set the university's direction, priorities, and objectives for the next decade, making it a critical juncture for advancing sustainability on and off campus.

AU RISE intends to submit a white paper to the Auburn University Strategic Planning Committee as a part of the formal university planning process. To help demonstrate to the planning committee the value and importance of sustainability to the Auburn Family, AU RISE will collect signatures of support for the white paper.

Their white paper outlines sustainability's role in creating an exceptional student experience, fostering impactful research and scholarship, and sparking a culture of innovation and excellence. It concludes by recommending:

sustainability be included as a driving force within the strategic plan, the formation of sustainability and resilience committees within the university governance groups, and the creation of a Vice President to represent and integrate these concepts into all aspects of the university's mission.
