Cheers to an exceptional Level 1 Court of Master Sommelier Examination weekend at the Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management! 🍷👏

Over two intensive days, our undergraduate and graduate students, along with faculty members, completed the Level 1 Court of Master Sommelier Examination!

This is a rigorous, fast-paced professional development experience focused on wine, spirits, beer, and saké, strengthening participants’ understanding of major wine regions, elevated service standards, and reinforced deductive tasting techniques essential to beverage leadership.

We are especially proud to recognize graduate students Julianna Haase and Caroline Shubert, who tied for the top scores during this weekend’s evaluation, an outstanding accomplishment among a highly competitive cohort.

Participants were guided by Master Sommeliers Pablo Braida and David Reuss, alongside our in-house Master Sommelier and adjunct faculty member, Thomas Price, whose expertise and mentorship helped refine tasting and service skills while building professional confidence. We were thrilled to welcome guests to our beautiful Auburn University campus for the 31st Annual Graduate Education & Graduate Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism (Jan. 8–10, 2026), held at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center.

Our welcome reception showcased the heart of hospitality and leadership, with Auburn University President Christopher B. Roberts and Auburn University College of Human Sciences Dean Susan Hubbard joining us in greeting scholars and industry leaders.

Guests enjoyed the Auburn spirit with our iconic War Eagle bird, Nova, and Aubie the Tiger, along with guided tours of the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center led by Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management undergraduate ambassadors, culminating in breathtaking views from our Walt and Ginger Woltosz Rooftop Terrace. 🦅🐅
