The boundaries between industry, academia and government are disappearing. That's exactly what's needed to address our national security challenges, and what's happening at the Tennessee Valley Corridor National Summit. On the Ensuring National Security panel today, Jonathan Pettus, executive director of Auburn University's Applied Research Institute in Huntsville, highlighted a critical reality: developing the workforce of tomorrow requires immersing students in high-impact, real-world projects today. Auburn is leading that effort by connecting students, researchers and partners to mission-focused work.

Wondering about all the construction in Auburn Research Park? It’s the start of the new 45-acre advanced manufacturing district adjacent to Auburn University’s campus. At the center of the district, will be Auburn RFID Lab. Students are already solving some of the most complex supply chain problems our industry partners face— including Walmart, Delta Air Lines, McDonald's and UPS. Imagine what they can do with the new 100,000 square foot facility. Dr. Symone Alexander, assistant professor of chemical engineering, explores biopolymer‑based solutions that support gut health, soil health, and toxin remediation—drawing inspiration directly from nature. By blending polymer science, process engineering, and circular manufacturing, her work advances bio‑based materials that help beneficial bacteria thrive, improving both human health and sustainable agriculture.

What does she love most about Auburn? The people.
Outside the lab, you’ll find her tackling DIY home renovation projects—or planting sunflowers with her children 🌻.

We’re proud to have Dr. Alexander shaping the future of bio‑based manufacturing at Auburn Chemical Engineering.
