The College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at Auburn University provides a proven path for students to pursue rewarding careers through five departments - biology, chemistry and biochemistry, geosciences, mathematics and statistics, and physics. OUR HISTORY…
While sciences and mathematics have existed in the educational framework of Auburn University since its beginning as East Alabama Male C

ollege in 1856, it was not until 1986 that those disciplines were officially brought together as the College of Sciences and Mathematics, often referred to as "COSAM." The change began with the plan of then-President James Martin to “make Auburn University a major national university.” He called particular attention to the need for Auburn to respond to emerging fields to address the educational expectations of future students and the research frontiers where sciences and mathematics were the focal point. The answer was to create the College of Sciences and Mathematics by combining the following departments:

From the College of Agriculture:
Department of Botany and Microbiology
Department of Zoology and Wildlife Sciences

From the School of Arts and Sciences:
Forestry and Biological Sciences
Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Geology
Division of Mathematics

Altered by a few changes since 1986, the College is now composed of the following 5 departments:

Biological Sciences
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Geosciences
Mathematics and Statistics
Physics

From Auburn geology to leading one of the nation's most influential science and technology organizations, Mark Peters ('86), came back to the Plains to share his message with our newest graduates.

Now CEO of MITRE, a nonprofit tech company, Peters reminded graduates that a scientific education is preparation for leadership. "My education taught me how to think. You learn how to approach a problem with curiosity and from all different angles."

Congratulations to the Class of 2026!🥳🎓

Valentin Küchle is helping to shape the next generation of mathematicians, one classroom choice at a time.

Valentin Küchle, 2025 COSAM Dean's Research Award winner, is transforming how we teach mathematics.

He believes that, with the right support, every student can be a math person!

His advice to instructors and students: "Be intentional with your choices. Don't expect good things to happen just by chance."

Auburn robotics is on top of the world. 🏆🤖

Aubie2, representing the Auburn Robotics Club, won the university division of the 2026 VEX Robotics World Championship — the largest student robotics competition in the world.

The team of mostly freshmen and sophomores built, coded, drove and strategized their way through an international field to bring the title home to Auburn.

War Eagle to our newest world champions!

Each February, Auburn Rural Medicine Program students travel to Washington, D.C. to attend the Rural Health Policy Institute, where they examined how national policy decisions impact healthcare access in rural Alabama.

The experience includes policy briefings, discussions on workforce shortages and rural hospital funding, and meetings with members of Alabama’s congressional delegation.

Students gain a clearer understanding of how legislation influences care delivery and the role physicians play in advocating for their communities!

From trial and error in the lab to finally getting results that make everything click, COSAM’s Undergraduate Research Fellows are getting real, hands-on experience that goes far beyond the classroom. 🔬

Students like Jada Conner and Brody Church are taking what they learn in class and applying it to meaningful research. It’s not just about the science, it’s about gaining confidence and learning what it really means to own your work.
