Before you take a bite of a strawberry from the farmer's market, make sure you're protecting yourself from harmful chemicals. ☣️

Dr. Benson Akingbemi, a AUCVM anatomy professor, has spent much of his career studying the effects environmental toxins can have on the body and its systems. He says the main way those toxins enter the bloodstream is through food and water.

What can you do to reduce the chemicals you consume?

💧 Avoid plastic water bottles and drink filtered water
🍎 Wash fruits and veggies with a mixture of baking soda and water
🥬 Remove the outer leaves of leafy greens
🥔 Scrub potatoes and other think-skinned vegetables

What do you do when parasite treatments stop working? 🤔

For years, veterinarians have treated dog hookworms infections with medications that target adult hookworms and larvae. But reports are showing those treatments don't work as well as they once did.

Dr. Jeba R. J. Jesudoss Chelladurai in the our Department of Pathobiology is working to uncover what's causing this resistance and what to do about it. She and her team have developed a PCR test that both identifies hookworms and how strongly resistant they are.

Here’s 10 seconds of Harrison, a wire-haired dachshund, to brighten your day. ☀️

Speaking of sunshine, the summer heat is on its way! Here are a few tips to keep your furry friends safe in the scorching temperatures on National Heat Awareness Day:

🚶 Walk your dog in the early morning or late evening to avoid scorching pavement.
🌡️ Don’t leave pets in the car — it can take just 10 minutes for your car to reach 109 degrees in 90-degree weather.
💧 Make sure pets have access to fresh, clean water.
⚠️ Know the signs of overheating — excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling & lethargy.

🐶 CVM PET OF THE WEEK: If you haven't gotten your weekly dose of cuteness, we've got you covered.

“Nurse” Nana abides by the motto “live like someone left the gate open.”

The 8-year-old collie/golden retriever mix got a new lease on life when she was rescued at 5 weeks old from a hoarding situation in Colorado. At the time, AUCVM Veterinary Assistant Sam Emmons worked at the rescue Nana was brought to and just couldn’t say no to fostering her.

“Since then, she has been my little duckling following me and enjoying life,” Emmons said.

Nana now spends her days chasing squirrels, chomping on cheese and cuddling with her feline siblings. She makes sure you know you’ll never be alone by staying right by your side.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Larry Dee, a 1969 CVM graduate, on May 15 at the age of 83. Dr. Dee (pictured center, with his brothers, Jon and James)was a remarkable and highly respected leader in the veterinary profession who made a lasting impact on our college through his spirit of philanthropy.

Dr. Dee and his family established the college’s Dee Family Endowed Chair in 2018. The Dee family also helped introduce Ms. Eleanor Ritchey to Auburn University, leading to the eventual establishment of the Scott-Ritchey Research Center.

Dr. Dee and his brothers helped make Hollywood Animal Hospital in Broward County, Florida, one of the top veterinary practices in the Southeast. Dr. Dee specialized in small animal surgery and internal medicine, and was a charter diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.

He devoted his life’s work to veterinary practice and organized veterinary medicine, serving as President of the Broward County VMA, the Florida VMA, the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association. Dr. Dee was a 1998 recipient of Auburn’s Wilford S. Bailey Distinguished Alumni Award and a member of the college’s Centennial Club.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Dee’s family and friends.

🚨 Noisy breathing isn't always a by-product of your dog "just getting older." 🐾

Laryngeal paralysis can make it harder for dogs to breathe — especially during exercise or in hot weather. Dr. Michael Tillson, our Bruce Pratt Eminent Scholar Chair in Small Animal Surgery, recently discussed this respiratory threat in an American Kennel Club interview.

This Memorial Day, we honor military veterans and military dogs who put their lives on the line to serve our nation. 🇺🇸

The War Dog monument on our campus stands as a year-round tribute to the Third Dog Platoon who died liberating Guam in World War II. The platoon was led by the late Dr. William Putney, a 1943 AUCVM graduate and U.S. Marine.

Today, there are around 1,600 military working dogs serving alongside American troops.

To all of our nation's heroes, thank you for your service!

🕷️ CVM PET OF THE WEEK: The roster of amazing pets who brighten the lives of our students, faculty and staff also includes the occasional eight-legged companion. 🕸️

Meet Lilac, a jumping spider who belongs to Dr. Brandi Brunson, the CVM's Director of Student Services and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology. While crickets are among the approved food sources for jumping spiders, you won’t find Lilac feasting on the chirpy insect.

"Crickets scare her,” Brunson said.

Lilac prefers less animated snacks, with strawberries and blue bottle flies topping the list. Brunson first became interested in jumping spiders, or Platycryptus undatus, through a social media group but it took her nearly a year to build the confidence to purchase one.

“I was in Petco one day and they had a single jumping spider that was 50 percent off,” she said. “I made the jump – pun intended – and brought her home with me.”

Lilac’s name stems from the color of her Chelicerae, the pair of appendages located just in front of the mouth. In terms of social preferences, Lilac takes after housecats.

“All interactions are on her terms,” Brunson said. “When she does wish to be held, she will hang out on my hand for long periods of time. It is actually very calming because your focus has to be on her, as well as keeping your hand steady, so all the other worries or stresses must take a backseat while you’re interacting with her.”

Ever wonder who cared for your rescue dog before they found their forever home? 🐾

If your pup came from a shelter in the Auburn area, there’s a chance Auburn Vet Med was part of their journey. 💙🧡

On National Rescue Dog Day, we’re highlighting our AUCVM Shelter Medicine Service team. Dr. Brendan Bergquist, Dr. Phillip Moon and Veterinary Assistant Jamie Johnson work with fourth-year veterinary students to provide essential medical and behavioral care for dogs and cats in partner shelters.

In 2025 alone, the team provided physical exams, preventative care and spay/neuter surgeries for 1,517 animals. 😲

These partnerships are vital, improving the lives of animals in need while giving students valuable, real-world experience.
