Join us for a special event with educator, author, and former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich as he shares his thoughts, built over 42 years in the classroom, on teaching, helping students overcome cynicism, and educating future generations.

Prof. Reich will discuss "The Last Class," a documentary film chronicling his final semester teaching Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and "Inequality for All," a film that takes place within Robert Reich’s classroom and examines widening income inequality in the U.S.

"Tip of the Month: How to Paraphrase and Not Patchwrite
Patchwriting is a form of unintentional plagiarism in which writers attempt to paraphrase someone else's words, thoughts, and ideas but the language is too close to the original author's wording—usually this is done by adding a few words or replacing words with synonyms. Patchwriting should be avoided; instead, learn how to effectively paraphrase a sentence or several sentences from a work by putting the idea or ideas into your own words.

Our Avoiding Plagiarism Guide shows an example of patchwriting and also provides suggestions for avoiding word plagiarism, which refers to using “another author’s exact words or phrases without quotation marks,” and idea plagiarism, which refers to presenting “an idea from another source without citing the author and year.”"
