AU Animal Sciences SB 19 Educational Spring Break Tour 2019

03/17/2019

Early morning start to get East bound and down, loaded up and trucking toward Auburn Al.

Spring Break 2019 to the Southern Great Plains is now in the record book. This study travel tour has reaffirmed that our students in the Department of Animal Sciences at AU as well as those traveling with us from Ag Economics, Ag Communications and Ag Education, Ag Science and Poultry Science are second to none.

At each tour stop our students were attentive and engaging. Our hosts recognized and praised their desire to learn and went out of their way to deliver quality programming. The week was long with a taxing schedule but well worth the commitment.

For me personally, the best part of the trip was not the thousands of cattle we saw or even our hosts perspective on animal agriculture; but, the look of enthusiasm on the faces of the 43 young leaders as they interacted with each of these stops. Our future in animal agriculture is in good hands.

Wayne Greene,
Department Head

Our driver for the week long study travel was Grover ^Tony^ Wilkerson. He is a repeat traveler as he handled the bus during SB 18. Tony has become a part of this study travel and well is well respected by all on board. His expertise in handling the bus in both heavy traffic and the open road is valued. He is always conscious of safety for the passengers while getting us to each stop on time. Thanks Mr. Tony.

The final field stop of AU Animal Sciences Spring Break 19 was a full day of intense study on the Double C Ranch near Springer OK. Chuck and Ruth Coffey along with sons, Aaron and Seth, opened the gates early to provide an in depth look at diversified ranching. They ranch over 2000 acres with commercial cattle, wildlife, and wind energy enterprises. Significant work is preformed in each of the enterprises for a sustainable production environment. Their philosophy is to leave it better than they found it. Each member of their team contributes significantly to agriculture at the local, state and national levels through numerous volunteer positions. This stop wrapped many aspects of this week long study/travel into one package.

Dr. Christa Ray talked to the students about the transition into a successful career. Dr. Ray is an alumnus of the Department of Animal Sciences at Auburn having sit in the same classrooms in Upchurch Hall as the students on AU Spring Break 19 now use. She has also ridden the same tour bus as she participated in AU Spring Break 13 also traveling to Amarillo. Her experiences as a student at Auburn and her travels on the Spring Break trip led her back to Amarillo where she now works as a Veternarian with USDA. Her story certainly is an example for the students that hard work and dedication will also lead them into successful careers in the animal industry.
